It seems like a bad connection though because it is hit or miss whether it connects and sometimes it will connect then I pull out to begin a pull and it will end the log. Should I try a new cable?
Try screwing in the serial cable & FTDI cable together so there's no break in the connection during bumpy driving.

I'm 95% sure I already did that but I can double check.

Is there any chance of making this automatically switch brighness levels based on parking light status - so that one doesn't have to push to dim it manually at night?

(My apologies if this has already been answered; I read most of the thread and didn't see it.)

I personally don't think that would be necessary... The backlight is not needed or visible in the daylight, so if you adjust the screen to your liking at night, that's as bright as it will ever get. You will never lose viability of the screen.

    Cool. Thanks guys.

My only frame of reference, since I haven't seen this unit in person yet, is the LCD on my G, which is backlit all the time just like the rest of the cluster and dims with the parking lights.

With that settled... yeah I want this.

Paul, you do great work! Where are people getting their clusters from - or are they modifying their originals?
