    OBD2/MUT adapter

As requested by fastbikes76 & unlogic, here is the USB VAG cable converted for use with the LCDBC as a serial version that fits in between the LCDBC and the serial OBD2/MUT cable. The purpose of making this adapter is for those users that have problems staying connected to the ECU. What makes this different from a normal OBD2/MUT interfacing is the interpretation of voltages. Anything below 2.5 volts is considered a logic '1', and anything above 2.5 volts is considered a logic '0'.

If anyone is interested contact me, I'm selling this at cost $15.

p.s. The shiny coating you see is a conformal coating to protect it from moisture. It will be enclosed a black 3D printed plastic case.

Got my board last week, it looks really nice. I installed it this weekend and got some good news and some bad news...

At low rpm the updates seem much quicker than before, very smooth.

Higher rpms are a different story however. With the delay set a 0 it stops updating at around 2800 rpm and with the delay set to 10 it stops updating at around 4200 rpm. Same as before essentially...

We've tried 3 different converters/cables now (counting the built in one) we're and getting almost the exactly the same behavior which makes me suspect this could be a software issue. The things which have made the biggest improvements so have been the software based. I'm thinking about the updates that fixed the disconnect issues and introduced the delay option.

Is there any chance you turn a special debug version of the software for this board which focuses on just the communication and the parameter around that?

Since the problems seem to get worse and worse as the RPM increases it almost feels like the LCDBC is choking on something. Maybe we need a delay that scales with the rpm?

I'm a full time software developer so if you have the ability to share some simplified debug version of the software for this board I could some experimenting myself.

Unlogic: As requested, I made a stripped down version for you to experiment with, so you can see how ECU MUT communication works. Email sent.

    What I've learned is this:
    (1) When the ECU isn't being bothered with constant requests and had a rest (10ms delay for example), it responds to LCDBC requests almost instantly (making noise nearly impossible to have an effect). If the ECU has no rest it will not respond immediately and noise has a chance of having an effect.

    (2) The reconnect/disconnect issue was just a increase in delay of 300ms to 5000ms. Apparently when the ECU disconnects communications, there must be a longer silence or pause before re-attempting to open communications with the ECU again. When I was testing for reconnect/disconnect, I simply unplugged my cable for a moment and re-inserted to see if LCDBC could reconnect automatically. Essentially when I unplugged my cable, this was an equivalent of a long silence.

    Anything is possible.

I found three OLED 16x2 screens that should work.

I was thinking something along these lines -

They come up to a 4" display which would be awesome to have a real time sort of datalogger display built into the dash.

Might take a little time to boot up (30 seconds?) but you can interface a Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone Black with the serial of the LCDBC to display different things. I'm not familiar with Arduinos, but they might work as well.

Yeah, the small 1.5" one does come in a round gauge version. PLX makes an OLED programmable gauge too in both 52mm and 60mm which is pretty cool.

I like the 4" one like above, if I can find space to intergrate it between the tach and speedo with a little custom fab and bit of fiberglass. Just more visible and can display more info simotaneously.
