CoopKill's Mistress Makeover Thread [Pic Heavy]

Cold start (50-70F coolant temp) with 10w30 VR1 it over runs my relief valve at 75+. Fully warm I'm at 25psi 1000rpm with .0018 on mains and rods and new OEM pump. 75psi (relief pressure) at 3500. I'll be switching to 20w50 VR1 for the summer.

I was messing with my idle and cruise tune and thinned out my oil a little with fuel and pressure dropped ~3psi at idle.

Pump has less than 3k on it, cold could be that hi actually. I need to see once injector is back. Will look for the data sheet, and post once found.

Help them, for they know not that which they do not know!

That would make sense with my injector/offset/afr issues. May have contaminated oil, but it was changed not long ago. Probably 150 miles.

I would change it with the same thing you have in it now and see if there's a difference.

I'm super glad I didn't shim my oil pump. I think I'm at around 80 psi cruising around at 3000 rpm even warm. 27 at 850 rpm. I think it is about 100 at start up. It is the most oil pressure I have ever seen on a 3/s, but then again I've never had new everything. I did also mildly cleanup the oil filter housing passages and I am sure Ray has tricks he has done. With more miles I can give better numbers. This is on 20w50 vr1 non synthetic.

At 2500 I had 40 psi on 15w50 mobil 1 on the old motor, LOL. I'm sure it would be 65-70 now.

I have great oil pressure cold, and under operating temps, but once it is up to temp my pressure takes a shit. 30-40 psi cold (can get exact when back together), and as low as 8-10 psi in the 190* area at idle. Using Rotella till broke in a few hundred miles. It has been annoying me for awhile, but cannot think of any reason for this. Although I did disassemble the bypass bolt/spring, and put back in. Not sure if that would have any effect on this issue.

Ideas other than bearing clearance? I will look for the data sheet, and post it once/if I find it.
Sorry man, but if I saw 10 psi oil pressure on a new motor I'd be pulling the pan. When my motor blew up last year and a rod had about 1/8" of movement I had 10 psi at idle.

Edit: I see you think you have had the oil thinned when running poorly, you can change that first, but if that doesn't do anything something is amiss in the engine.

That's crazy..My first start up after the initial rebuild on 15w40 with clearances at around 25 was 70 to 80 start up psi with ambient at about 90-95F, and a warm idle of 18 to 20 psi at 800rpm.

Agreed. Think I was somewhere around 8-12 psi IIRC with a 179k longblock..Never did tear open the oil pump to measure clearances in there (to see if it had been replaced at 120k), but the bearings were down to copper on mine and a scratched crank. I wouldn't feel comfortable with that low pressure on a fresh rebuild.

Bill, do you remember off hand what your first start up oil pressure was? Might help figure out if your issue is engine related or oil being thinned.

Sounds about like mine. I'm sure mine will jump up a bit with 20w50. I was thinking the exact opposite on shimming...kinda wished I had. It won't affect warm idle pressure, but since I'm spinning it up to 8k, I think a 90psi relief pressure vs 75-80 would be nice. 20w50 may overrun it anyway up top. We'll see on the next oil change which will be the same non-synth VR1 20w50 you are running.

Cold I am/was over 80psi. I can't smell for fuel so will change oil, and check that way.
