I do think that Gruden is extremely over-rated. He gets more credit than he ever should for the Super Bowl victory with TB, but I'd say he doesn't get enough credit for his success with Oakland, but that was a short run so ahrd to say.

Longer period with both teams shows he is about an average coach who had one very good year with his "own" team (although it was Davis' team) and one exceptional year with Tony Dungy's players. SB aside, pretty standard stuff considering the modern game of parity, you would expect a team is going to make the playoffs 3-4 times in a 10 year period. Take the SB season out of it though, he's probably a .500 coach. Smartest move he made was not going back into coaching and just taking the ESPN gig.

Not arguing that he doesn't k ow his stuff, or that he's funny.

Merely that as a coach, he is overrated against how he actually performed.

to be fair Dungy did not get it done with the team he did. who'd Gruden have as a QB Brad Johnson. yeah, it took Dungy Peyton Manning. over reated maybe but a lot of coaches could have easily screwed that up.

I think Bryan and I are a little biased lol. I agree though, he is a bit over-rated, there are only a few coaches though that are not. Especially ones from the last 15-20yrs.

I had always heard from certain quarters a believable rumor that Farve blew so much air up Gruden's skirt he was able to float all the way to Tampa, where Sapp (a Farve-buddy) ran some good interference with the rest of the team.

Eventually things went hinky, and I always thought it came down to Gruden's youth - he did make a pretty solid decision, getting off the sidelines.
Ranked No. #1 in initial quality

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

It's true, but that Tampa team didn't win based on it's QB..That defense was filthy and loaded with Hall of Famers. The fact that they played Gruden's previous team the Raiders in the Super Bowl and Oakland just promoted the offensive coordinator to head coach likely helped turn the league MVP in Rich Gannon into the QB who threw 5 picks in the SB...

Many coaches could've messed that up, sure, but to assume that Gruden is single handedly the only thing that changed for Tampa with Dungy vs Gruden with them winning is absurd but some people feel that way.

As a Tennessee Vols fan though, I like Gruden. I'd like to think that I never let my allegiances to a team color my perception of someone..That said, fuck the Patriots.

Time to start priming up for the Packers game tomorrow. Hopefully Atlanta doesn't pull some sort of vengeance on us.
