And I sure Manziel will play it off like they did Cam... He didn't see any money, he was unaware money was being handled for his signatures. Its that simple.

NCAA can't do squat, its a great "out" and works. NCAA players wanting to cash in should simply say "go ahead parents, get rich off me, just don't tell me squat about it"... Problem solved... NCAA still a joke! Hang Pryor though! that shirt trader...
somebody's sore their guy got caught.

Well looks like the NCAA is going to hammer Johnny Fooseball...with a half game suspension.

Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M Aggies suspended for 1st half of season opener against Rice Owls - ESPN

Favorite quote of the article: Manziel violated NCAA bylaw 12.5.2.1, an NCAA spokesperson confirmed. The rule says student-athletes cannot permit their names or likenesses to be used for commercial purposes, including to advertise, recommend or promote sales of commercial products, or accept payment for the use of their names or likenesses.

So pretty much, any NCAA player whose name was linked to a jersey on the NCAA store, and any NCAA player who has had a character at his position with his physical characteristics in the NCAA football games, should have to sit out at least a half of the first football game. The irony of this just murders me.

That's the meat of the case out West challenging the NCAA. They can profit from likeness(es), but the athletes can't. This case has teeth, and will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I suspect that it'll get close to the NCAA losing and then they will try to settle out of court to avoid it. Pretty much their style.

Ahh, but they're looking to make it a class suit. This soon won't be just a single individual, or handful of plaintiffs. It will be nearly all NCAA student athletes. If you want to view it from an EA games stand, you might be looking back to 1989(ish). It's going to be a long drawn out process, but it needs to happen. The NCAA is out of control.

Absolutely. Had a thought earlier (while I should be doing school work,) and just curious if you would agree:
If a student goes out of state to attend a school and pays out of state tuition and fees, reasonable expectation of charges would be about 40k for a year at a public school correct? In state, you're looking at around 10k in tuition, roughly 1.5k in books and supplies, 5k for housing, roughly another 4k or so for dining expenses. So round about 20k for in state sound about right?

In a world without scholarships, schools realistically would waive out of state tuition for athletes from other areas. Otherwise they're limited to their own state for the most part, which limits the talent pool. At such a price, the value of a scholarship for a student athlete is the effect of a full time job at $10 an hour. Which isn't too bad, and maybe a dollar or so higher than the average college student. However, throw in things like Federal Pell Grant, state scholarships for students (here in TN it's around 4k a year) and academic scholarships, and really it's maybe 12-15k for a year. Which turns into somewhere around 7ish an hour equivalency for someone who could work in addition to attending school, which would be right around (possibly below) minimum wage.

The school that made the least in revenue in 08 was Arkansas State with $8,392,852. Their total expenses INCLUDING scholarship costs $10,388,098. They valued the cost of tuition and fees at $2,873,555. This is the entirety of their athletic department including the other "lesser" sports. Most schools, including the tuition, bring in income near their expenses. But again, that's based on their valuation of every student athlete's tuition and fees based on actual residence. Without scholarships counting as such, schools would most likely be offering those rates at instate which would be about half that. Should tip the balance back to the black for every school to run every athletics program. However, considering schools increase their expenses budget to match income and play keeping up with the Joneses (Butch Jones that is ), not exactly a surprise that it's fairly close.

Source for the figures: College Athletics Revenues and Expenses - ESPN

USA Today also had a listing of these numbers from 06-11, which included detailed break downs for teams.
Like Texas going from 97 million in revenue in 06, and expenses at 90.7 mil.
Then 07, the expenses are up to 97 mil and revenue is up to 105 mil.
Then expenses jump to 110 mil and revenue hits 120 mil.

During this time of expenses increases, what increased? Buildings and grounds (Building/grounds: Facilities costs charged to the athletics program, including debt service, maintenance, utilities and rental fees.) for the Athletic Department went from 13 mil to 16 mil, and "other expenses" (Listed as Other: Includes guarantees paid to other schools, severance payments to past coaches and staff, recruiting, team travel, equipment and uniforms, game day and camp expenses, fundraising and marketing costs, spirit group support, medical expense/insurance and conference dues. It also includes expenses charged to athletics by the university, such as building maintenance ) skyrocketed from 36 mil to 47 mil in 3 years. So the school suddenly found another 11 million to charge the athletic department despite no major (read: expensive football contracts) staff changes? Even assuming the cost of travel spiked (which it did due to oil prices taking off) it wasn't a 33% increase I don't think.

Good stuff. I dont have time for a serial response now, so... I blame mack browns bloated contract. Oh, and the LHN

Only game I care about tonight is fresno state vs rutgers. I think carr will build off his stout junior year. I've heard pundits claim he's better than derek. They made air force look small, shitty, and slow in the game I attended last year to win the mwc... then went to hawaii and stunk against garret gilberts smu team.
