I dont know the reasoning, but NJ often has the lowest gas prices in the US. Specifically in South Jersey. Northern Jersey tends to be a little more expensive.

Your gas prices are low due to a very low tax on gasoline (14.5), and having a crapton of refineries. The cost of having people there to pump your gas for you actually adds about 10 cents a gallon though. It's also related to the type of gas that has to run up there. Certain areas are required to run different reformulations of gas due to ozone requirements which raises the rates.

TN also has very low gas prices, we're somewhere around 3.10 a gallon right now. Our tax is 21.4.

its for safety and it causes gas to be lower due to taxes and insurance for the business is lower as well.... i would hop over to jersey to fill my tank when i lived in philly and it was cheaper even with the toll...kinda crazy
