Sure, Apple, and even Microsoft, have done this in the past. Some were justifiable (e.g. Xerox was never capable or particularly interested in bringing their graphic interface to market), others were not (e.g. when Google got wind that Apple was was working on a mobile OS through insider information, put Google Chairman Eric Schmidt on Apple's board, and essentially betrayed their trust). Here's an interesting read, in case you missed it:

What Really Made Steve Jobs So Angry at Google?

So, in short, Apple just doesn't want others to copy the ingredients that made their products so successful. Just like how the recipe for Coca-cola is so well guarded. If the knock-off brands could make it and have it taste exactly the same, then why buy the real thing? Call that monopolizing all you want, but most creators would just call this protecting their investment.
You are clearly buying into Apple's plea. Ever think that people bought Samsung devices because they didn't want an Apple device? Just like there are Apple fanboys, there are Anti-Apple (Android fanboys). Many wanted a system not Apple which is why they bought other than Apple. Since Apple was the first to have the iPhone, how come those that bought Samsung didn't just buy Apple since it was available?

It's complete crap to think that any device that Samsung sold should have been an Apple sale. That is complete bullshit. At tops I say 5% may have decided to go to Apple without features like bounce back.

Lets be honest here, Android's UI has never been as smooth or as fast as Apple until ICS and JB. It has always had a second class UI. So since Apple was better, why didn't they win people over? BECAUSE PEOPLE DIDNT WANT APPLE. $1 Billion in lost sales would ONLY be true if they had a true monopoly. Tell me I'm wrong.

I'm well aware of that. I have learned that you and IPD are the "anything but Apple" type of guys. Some for reasonable reasons, others for completely non-factual, biased and/or straight-up bogus reasons. Some of the things you two say leaves me scratching my head -- "is that really what Android users think?" You sound like people that haven't used an Apple product since 1994, let alone ever.

I didn't say that. This is in relation to the few Samsung phones that violated Apple's patents. Which is not their entire smartphone lineup.

They did win people over, lots and lots of people in fact. But as you pointed out, this didn't include everyone, as there are understandably people out there that an Android device would be better suited for. I've said it in nearly every thread we've debated in: pick the phone that works best for you.

Also the $1 billion settlement wasn't just for lost sales. It was to cover legal fees, the time of every employ that had to be dragged into court to speak, some lost sales (sure), but ultimately to give Apple their cut for the design elements that went into making Samsung's patent-violating products more successful than they would have been without it.

The funniest thing about all of this, is Samsung is still the big winner. The Iphail5 is comprised of many Samsung supplied parts.

I still don't know what to say.. I'm losing faith in humanity, what IPD and Nicksvr4 said

Edit: in my opinion, Apple suing Samsung will hurt sales more than anything "else"
Samsung couldn't have bought better advertising with any amount of money. Maybe some of the Ipeople will pull their heads out of the sand to buy a product that's cheaper and better.

To clarify my position, yes I am biased against apple. However, I have seen and experienced the faults with their products first hand. Steve Jobs marketing sure brought in the sheep with money in hand. We'll see how they do the next ten years without him at the forefront...

What Android fanboys hear: "Apple said that Samsung products are 'substantially the same'."

What an expert witness actually said: "It's my opinion that this phone [Galaxy S 4G], the design of this phone would be considered substantially the same."

"expert witness"? i'm guessing that's someone about as unbiased as your average video-game-reviewer for a big-name publication.

And yet he came up with the same conclusion a 2 year old could make. You'd have to be blind not to say the same.

i don't say the same, and i'm hardly blind (mild myopia, perhaps, but not blind). if i were samsung right about now, i'd continue making whatever devices i wanted--and put a giant "NOT APPLE" logo on the back. i don't know who these idiots are the claim that the devices look alike--but clearly they never compare the back of the devices--the only area where aesthetics aren't overruled by the necessities of function.

apple is wrong. only here in the US do the judges appear so completely biased:

Personally I think more people should listen to and be like Steve Wozniak. For someone that should be bias towards Apple as a major share holder, I find his opinions to be very unbiased.

His views are basically that iPhone is more polished, and basic is functionality, while Android is improved and gives a greater range of options for those wanting more out of their phone.

He also thinks this approach Apple is taking in suing everyone is bad.

I do agree with his views, but I hate the Apple fanboys that insist in the iPhone being better and innovative. They swear that Apple gets all credit for everything in the smartphone market and that Android phones are just iPhone imitators.

They need to give credit where credit is due. Regardless though these lawsuits just limit choice and slow down progress. I like it better when each has to one up the competitor, whether through new ideas or improving existing ones. That's how software works.

Look at the android dev community. Everything is open source and everyone builds off each others ideas and code. Android even gives out its code to be improved upon.

Obviously giving out the source code will not work for apples business model, and that's fine, but recreating features should be allowed IMO. Its not like they are stealing code, they have to make it from scratch.

Ah, that was a pretty funny announcement (they always have a great sense of humor in the UK), but the ruling was stayed and is in the process of being appealed.

Regardless, not all tablets need to look the same (as other successful manufacturers have shown), and I applaud anyone that makes an effort to be different.
