I think you misread what I said. I didn't mention anything about the CPU's. A lot of the high performance laptops use the same Processors as desktops. Sager expecially. They make really nice laptops. I said GPU.

Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with gaming on a laptop. Like I said earlier I have a gaming laptop myself. I have a Compal IFL90. Saying that laptops are anything but inferior to a desktop is just blatantly wrong though.

i never said laptops were superior. but they are FAR, FAR from being the inferior weaklings that you seem to portray them as. i've watched laptops evolve over the last decade. you can now have a laptop which can play ANY game on maxed out settings. it may not have the fps of a desktop, but you can still crank it up. and i doubt a lot of people actually give a rat's ass about the difference between 120 fps and 180 fps; considering what the accepted limit of human visibility is--60fps.

additionally, while nvidia has done nothing but rebadge 2-gen-old desktop cards as laptop cards; ati has been busy putting identical hardware in both desktop and mobile solutions--in many cases with only a slight dip in voltage. i've seen the benchmarks. single vs. single. sli vs. sli. crossfire vs. crossfire. mobile is NOT that far behind desktops. it will always be a little behind desktops--but that gap has been closing. it's not a "victory by a mile" as you seem to so happily proclaim.

My whole argument from the start was that the price/performance for a laptop just really isn't there for me. Yes, you can get a laptop that plays everything at max, but you pay a premium for it. My point was that you can get a desktop to do it at a much more attractive price/performance ratio. More money to color match my peripherals I guess.

It was already said, but yeah - mobile GPU < desktop GPU counterpart

Case in point - we both have GPU's labeled as GTX 285's

    spec 285 285M
    core mhz 648 576
    shader mhz 1476 1500
    Mem mhz 1242 1020
    mem bus 512b 256b
    mem total 1GB 1GB

    and most importantly
    GTX 285 = GT200b chip
    GTX 285m = G92b chip

Which means, effectively, you have a GPU somewhere between the 9800GTX and 9800GTX+ as they are the same architecture and similar specs. Basically, you're top of the line laptop has a 2 generation old GPU in it.

Now, this isn't saying it's bad in anyways (the G92b is the best chip nVidia has ever built if you ask me), but it shows the definite limitations of the laptop to be on par with a given desktop setup.

...and as soon as i'm done typing this, i'm going to play ut3...on my laptop....from my hotel room...

so let me know how well that rig works for you when you're on vaction. or do you use an iphone instead? ROFLMFAO!

    p.s.

jeremy, i already addressed that. that's nvidia's ploy. ati's mobile offerings are far superior, imho. i wish i had one; i just can't stomach the thought of losing 120 vertical pixels and having to lug a clunkier case.

Until I built my current rig, i hadn't had a desktop for probably 5-6 years. Then I realized my laptop just sat on my desk and I never really took it anywhere.... then I realized I had shit for power compared to a desktop... Haven't had a laptop since. My droid does everything I need it to do when I'm out and about.

Anywho, back on topic more. Anyone have a 700w power source they want to get rid of for cheap?

I just bought a second 5770 HD and according to my calculations, I wont have enough power once I install it :/

Why in the world are you playing computer games while you're on vacation? Go outside! Can't you be away from your stuff for any extended period of time?

Being connected and having your phone with you all the time is one thing, but playing unreal tournament everywhere you go is pretty ridiculous.

    Think about it.

so you have both a desktop and a laptop. that's cool.

how much does having both rigs cost vs just a pure gaming laptop? 'cause i only have just this laptop.

i don't have a smartphone. not yet anyways. doubling my monthly bill is not something i'm about ot enter into lightly.

and ftr, i'm not the adventurous type in general. i could exist perfectly happy with an oc3 connection hard-wired into my cerebral cortex. besides, when it's 120 degrees and you're surrounded by nothing but sand for 500 miles in all directions, gaming is about the ONLY thing that's available to pass the time.
