I have no cure for your not having heard it with your own ears.
I wasn't asking for you to produce proof, I was just curious as to your source of information that was all.

Then why do you feel it necessary to pick this particular nit:
Ignoring the whole aspect of the item in question in favor of an isolated portion can only be done when both your gripe and suggested solution are also isolated to said portion rather than whole. So unless you are only advocating a change in union policy you can't neglect the overall function of the union just becuase it has one aspect you dissagree with.

I don't recall stating any objections to "good" teachers.
I'm not advocating that you had an objection with good teachers. However, what you and many other people don't understand is the political climate created in today's schools by parents with the mentality outlined in the comic I posted. Responsibility for failure on the part of the student is being placed squarely on the teacher. That combined with administration that is more worried about appeasing parents rather than upholding consistent standards and you get a recipe that brings any teacher that parents dissagree with under fire.

So how do you reconcile the issue of the "marginal" teachers that don't make any waves falling under the radar in today's schools but the good teachers get parent complaints for expecting students to do homework, study for tests, and follow classroom instructions and rules? How do you exclude the problems created bad parents from this equation?

There is, however, the latent affliction of a degree of sloppiness or lack of ambition that manifests after tenure.

Never heard of that, though, have you?

How about a teacher who is minimally satisfactory prior to tenure?

One who habits the last fringes of desirability, employee-wise?

Just good enough to hang on until tenured, then decides to shirk?

How much and what sort of review and assessment is commonly conducted before tenure?
Here is the real issue that needs addressed and fixed. The problem is that the simple fix isn't a good one. As for pre-tenure review I would imagine that the specifics are school district and even state dependent, however the basic constants are comparatively heavy in class supervision of the teacher by the administration as well as lesson plan review.

The real question in my mind is how do fairly determine who are the good teachers and who are not?

    Okay:

As to crappy parents, 100% ditto.

As to teachers - why not do away with tenure, relative to job retention?

Vesting, retirement - all good, but leave them open to the full panoply of on-going evaluation.
Ranked No. #1 in initial quality

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

This would be acceptable provided you could ensure only the bad teachers got the boot, but until you give the parents a wake up call or get the administration to back the teachers rather than facilitate the parents griping, I don't think this will work.

I think in the current climate of the teacher being blamed for the actions of the student you would see the good teachers go just as much if not more than the bad ones.

I'll make a quick plug for school vouchers before I bow out - you must be much younger than I am, because I can't even see the hair to split it any further...

We follow the earth. The earth follows the stars. The stars know their way and though the body dies. The stars will remain, like the waves of the sea and restless slate.
