Give them a cut??? Like a percentage? That would be a disaster, the end of college sports as we know it.

As far as I'm concerned they already get paid considerably. A free ride through school, covering tuition, living expenses, books and supplies, meals, training, coaching, and tutoring, worth ~$100k per year is not insignificant. Furthermore, there is a great chance they got into a university that they couldn't have attended on academic merits alone. How much is a degree from USC, Michigan or Virginia worth, especially if you never managed more than a 980 on your SAT. Finally, they get to play in the NCAA, which is to the NFL what the FLC is to the Premier League in English soccer - the de facto second tier system from which the top-tier league exclusively recruits. Oh, let's not forget the world class fitness and weight training, in addition to professional coaching, all in preparation for a career in the NFL.

How much do folks in other 2nd tier leagues get paid? How much is the salary of a player in the English FCL or in AAA minor league baseball? I bet NCAA athletes get more than most of those professionals, even if it's not cash in their pocket.

It seems perfectly logical to give a stipend equivalent to a low-level wage job so that the kids have some spending money, but that stipend must be the same for all athletes in all scholarship positions, and it must be universal across the board from 'Bama and Auburn to SW Podunk State. It is absolutely unacceptable to allow big name programs to buy the best players with higher salaries and benefits. They already have an nearly insurmountable advantage over small programs with facilities, TV exposure and reputation, adding pay would mean the end for non-AQ schools and would cheapen the game immensely.

i agree. they don't need a "cut". they need minimum "living expenses". frankly, with room/board/education already paid, there's no reason why any such stipend should be over 10k annually, let alone 20k.

Well, uh, yeah. Exactly. Sure didn't mean to suggest otherwise.
