Just curious, but have you ever used High-temp Lab Metal to fill any imperfections prior to powder-coating?
I recently bought a can of the stuff & have had really good results with it. Pretty much will dribble into the defect (once thinned), then let it air dry for 24-hrs, & finally heat cure it for an hour to finish up the repair process.
I havent used it yet. I used JB weld to fill a bunch of pits in an oil pan and that worked well although it took a while. If I did it again, I would order some KL primer. I havent really run into any parts that had serious imperfections that would need the lab metal but I would be interested to see your results.
I was thinking about getting the primer and shooting a couple coats on a cast iron piece like the ones above and see what it would look like to completely smooth the casting out.

I pulled out a batch of parts to do today and they all need some work before coated. The turbo water lines are sitting in Ospho rust remover since there is no way I would be able to blast the insides of them. I plugged the ends of the turbo oil lines and poured some gas down in them to break up any crap in there. My thermostat housing is quite rusty inside after sitting this long so I am debating what the best method is to tackle that. I may just buy a better condition one as all of the nipples are deformed from rust and only 2 nipples are available from Mitsubishi.

I've got one for sale, although you might not be satisfied with the condition and will have to strip the paint off.

Couldn't just tap and thread some new ones? Maybe even AN fittings?
I cleaned the inside of mine using the home made soda blaster. Worked perfectly. Wasn't difficult to clean either.Quote:

The yellow/green parts are going into my 99 SL which is a crazy restoration like what you're doing. AWD conversion, complete tear down and redo of everything metal...
I looked into plating the turbo heat shields but the plater wouldn't touch them as they are not steel. I went with a rustoleum 2000 degree paint.Quote:

As you can see, I haven't had a chance to powder & cure them, but my previous Stealth cover I did in mirror red had an imperfection that I filled smooth with Lab Metal.
Looks like it works well. Is it that round spot that you filled? I should probably order some to have on hand for when I come across parts that need it. Thanks for the suggestion.Quote:

Last update for a month probably. Our lease with our landlord was supposed to end December 31st because she wanted to sell the house. Well I just found out 2 days ago that someone is now closing on the house November 8th. So I will be spending the next month packing and moving and getting the car back into a trailer-able state. I am dropping off all the fasteners at the platers tomorrow even though I didn't get all of the missing bolts I needed. I will have to do a small batch for those later. After we find a new house, hopefully I can get the garage setup fairly fast and get back to work on it.
I did do all the turbo oil and water lines before I got the news though.

Those look good! I just added them into my zinc plating order instead of painting.

Yeah, I was thinking about that after I coated them. I wanted them in this color, but I should have done zinc first to keep the insides of the lines protected, and then just powder coated over the outside zinc. Your zinc plated parts look great though, I considered zinc turbo lines when I saw yours but for some reason I decided a while ago that I wanted all the lines on the car to be this black chrome color.Quote:

Your oil feed & return lines look great!! I will tell you that it's an absolute PITA if you try to get the rear return line installed with the engine still in the car...My nicely powdered one now has some battle scars from the slight wrestling that occurred.

Speaking of moving, we just recently looked at a house with a 4 car garage. It had the standard 2/1 split garage doors on the front but it had an extra parking space and 1 car car garage door on the back of the house with another driveway in the fenced backyard. It would have been an amazing garage upgrade. We showed up at 5:30, the people who got there at 5:00 signed the papers before we even got to walk through the actual house. Now every house we look at with a standard 2 car garage is just depressing in comparison. The search for a new home continues, but I feel that garage was a one-time find for a rental home.

Well the move was successful, I got the fasteners back a couple of days before we had to be out of the house and I got the car put back together enough to get it on a tow truck. What a pain in the ass. The new garage is still a mess, nothing is setup. Only have one update to contribute to this thread: the bolts. 99% of them look great, really happy with them. I found several that still have some rust on them, they got stuck together during the plating process and some spots were missed, but no big deal really.

Great job! Exactly what I went through a few months back. Takes at least a few solid hours to sort them out. I have ~50 pictures of where they go if you run into any trouble :)

I just realized that I never did show any after photos of what that same valve cover I filled with High-Temp Lab Metal looked like after I powdered it. I did take the easier route and went with the OEM black wrinkle finish, but it turned out looking very nice.
