i did it for a while. the quality of alu varies and can mess with the results (cause blotchiness‘). high quality alu worked great, cheep stuff came out like garbage lol. im sure a pro setup would work better than mine on the poor quality alu, but i still had around $1000 into my setup so it wasn’t too 'back yard'.
for an example, dirt bike triple clamps wouldn’t come out with an even shade of a color, unless a dark dye was used. Black would work on almost anything, red could sometimes look pink, orange could look yellow, ect. An OEM clutch lever or brake lever would always came out beautiful. i tried a cheepo aftermarket lever and it just dissolved in the sulfuric acid. iirc the zinc in the alu alloy can be dissolved into solution by the sulfuric acid which explains why cheep alu never came out good and would sometimes get some minor pitting. Its been ~3-4 years since I last did this so maybe there have been some improvements in the process since then.

"Type III (hard coat) anodizing is done at a
much lower temperature and higher current level. It gives an anodized layer up to .002 but is normally at .0005" (Mil spec) in most anodizing shops.
Type III anodized surfaces can typically only be dyed black or dark green."
after re-reading my color issue
might have been due to the alu quality and the low temps/high current/long bath time that i was utilizing.
