Max OEM Current Draw

I was wondering has anyone ever calculated what the potential max current demands are for our alternator? I know this would vary from make in model but with an itemized list we could get really close for every model available.

120 amp alt......soooooooo Or was it 110, non turbos got a 90.

110, not no car uses 100% of it alternator, a general rule of thumb is the car audio community is 75% of the Alternators rating is for powering the car.

Steve, do you think this could be simulated at idle with an amprobe? Just turn everything on and take a reading?

That would get real close, you would have to factor in ABS, AWS, ECS as well, unless their always on drawing current with the ignition on.

I think I would need to either disconnect the battery or take a measurement at the battery and alternator and add them up. I can also run the ABS pump, AWS and ECS are probably negligible. If I get some free time I'll play with it, probably won't be anytime soon though.

Would be neat to know, I recently learned how to calculate the typical music draw in relation to how much wattage you want and what class of amp you use. know what the 3S alternator has to spare helps with design, also Mechman will not make a 220 amp alternator for our cars anymore, when he was making them, they had a 6500 max RPM, revd higher than that would burn it up. so 150 is the highest he makes now.

Is that what the problem was with them? It seemed like everyone who had one of those 220's burned them up within a year or 2

Indeed, and with what a learned the extra 40 amps can power 1400 watts when playing music.

Not exactly. Mechman WILL build and sell you one. They simply took them out of their stocking line up. If you went to NG 2011, you might remember the Mechman in my wife's yellow car "burned up" when I went past 6500. That problem was caused by the pulley on the alternator being the wrong size. Change pulley, no more problem. The 3.5 y/o Mechman 240 amp unit in the yellow car has seen many, many trips to 7200+ rpm in those 3.5 years without issue. I know they will make them because I called them last week and asked them.
