Popular Science was not a car mag, and only occasionally had car related content... People just didn't know any better, and had no idea what nasty stuff was in used motor oil. It came out of the ground, what harm was there in putting it back...?

I remember flushing my radiator once a year, with a kit made by Prestone that had a nozzle to shoot the antifreeze out of the top of the radiator and out into the street. Then it would flow down the street and into the storm drain. I never once thought about what it could be doing once it made it to the bay.

I remember my parents telling me about when they were kids, it wasn't uncommon, nor really frowned upon to just throw trash out of the car while you were driving as opposed to throwing it away when you got home or at a gas station
