    X^2 +2x + 1 can be broken down into (x+1)(x+1)

    X^2 +3 cannot be broken down. You can't split the x^2 +3 into a (x+sqrt3)(x-sqrt3) because you'd end up with x^2 - 3.
    You can't solve for x^2 +3 = 0 without breaking the rules. You end up with X^2 = -3 and a squared factor cannot possibly equal a negative (any x^2 will be positive no matter the value of x with the exception of 0.)

    In short: x^2 +2x+1 / x^2 + 3 is as compact as you can get it.

    Maybe I'm retarded then. I multiplied both sides by (x^2 + 3). I thought I got x=1, but let me see, maybe I forgot an X.

    x= equation
    so x(x^2 + 3) = (x^2 + 2x +1)
    x^3 + 3x = x^2 +2x +1
    x^3 + x = x^2 + 1
    x^3 - x^2 + x = 1
    x^2 - x + 1 = 1/x
    x^2 - x = 1/x - 1
    x^2 = x + 1/x - 1
    x^2 + 1 = x + 1/x

    at this point, I literally have the same thing on both sides of the equation, and my brain frickin hurts. And it's taken me way longer to get this far than it should. I'm rather embarrassed about that. I can't figure out how to simplify it further (I think I goofed last time), but it still looks like X = 1, because there are no other numbers for which this will compute.

    f(x) is a whole statement that stands for y when graphed, but it isn't function times (x), that is to say: f(x) = y, not f(x)=y(x). So you don't get x(x^2+3).

    If you tried to graph it (plug it into a graphing calculator) you'll see that the equation only touches the X axis at -1. The best you could say would be that 1 root of (x^2 +2x+1)/(x^2+3) is equal to -1, and that the limit of the equation is x=1.

    You get the root from the factoring (roots of the top are both -1) and when plugged into the equation you get 1-2+1/1+3...Or to put it better: 0/4. 0 in the numerator means that the whole thing equals zero, and thus is a root the equation as a whole.

    Algebra is one of those things that if you don't use it frequently you forget how it works.

    Ok. So My math wasn't incorrect, just the premise of what I was trying to solve for. Got it.

    Unfortunately, I never found a high-paying job that taxes the area of my brain that algebra did/does...so I certainly feel like it's atrophied.
