Thadd, a X-men movie with the core 5 would not sell. While it might be historically right for the comics the characters lack the individual popularity to get the movie made. Why has Wolverines been in al of the X movies? Simple he is the most popular X-man and his presence gets budgets approved. That alone is why he was center stage in the new movie rather than kitty the way it was in the comics. Popularity.

Fine. So then don't stick 100% to the comics, but at least have Iceman as a teacher at the University--not some pissy student. It's like they went out of their way to fuck up the canon. Same shit with Transformers. Same shit with Star Trek...although since they pretty much said "alternate universe" in ST, it was more palatable. Into Darkness was still crap though.

that's why it's only "based on" the comic book characters and story(ies). They are specifically trying to go off in a slightly different direction with things like that.

pissing off the purists is more like it. If there were never any saturday morning cartoons...I might almost be able to forgive the transgression.

more like appealing to the masses. they could care less about the purists, they're in it to make money, plain and simple. if they were catering to the so called purists, they'd make much less moolah.

Yes, I already know all of Hollywood is "sellout". That's one of the reasons I hate "Hunger Games" so much; it's patently obvious that the author decided to cash-in on the JK Rowlings tried&true method. Worse, Hollywood actually optioned the books. I don't buy that BULLSHIT about movie remakes being because of how much it costs to option new material. Optioning #1 best-sellers like "50 shades of grey" and "Hunger Games" doesn't come cheap. What IS cheap is stuff that has been around for 50+ years.

    P.S.
I don't believe that pacifying the purists and appealing to the masses are mutually exclusive ideas. Most people I know liked the 2010 Star Trek movie--both trekkies/trekkers and newcomers. Let's face facts here, the reason that an established series GOT FANS IN THE FIRST PLACE--was because of generated appeal. That might require a couple tweaks here and there for broader appeal--but in no way does it mean canon goes out the window on the altar of expedited profits. Unless--of course--you have no soul.

to be fair the ST series for example started getting fans 40-ish years ago. shit changes and so has the series over the years.

btw: is there a current ST series with new episodes on? I don't think so.

The reason there's no ST series is because they stopped focusing on what made the series great: character development & a mirror held up to humanity and our ethics/morals. That's what captivated me about TNG and DS9. The rest were not nearly as intriguing.

Xmen7: 8/10. Enjoyable watch. Still don't like jennifer lawrence. i'd say it's the best of the xmen movies so far. don't think i could necessarily rate it above spiderman 5, but they're roughly equal in my book.

I'm really excited to see Ninja Turtles....
