hence his cryptic analogy that "the game becomes free after a short period of time". meaning that you invest time into it sufficient to buy a monthly subscription credit--and you pay nothing. it's still not free enough for me though.

EVE Evolved: Do PLEX make EVE pay-to-win? | Massively

Read that, gives you all the details on how PLEX works, but in short you can purchase PLEX (either outright with real world currency or in game with their currency) to pay for your subscription time. What IPD is saying is that after a short period playing, you can earn enough in game credits to buy PLEX and not have to pay the subscription with actual money and the game effectively becomes free to play (Course the real question is: How much is your time worth?)

Other games have also started using similar systems even in non subscription based models such as RIFT (which I do play), where you can buy a certain type of credit (Known as a REX) with real world currency that can be sold/traded to other players that they can use in the RIFT Store to buy gear, mounts, items, experience boosts, etc. It's becoming a more and more popular system actually, even Blizzard's next MMO Titan is doing away with the subscription model and allegedly moving to something similar to this.

no thanks. if i have to invest time...just to afford the "cost" of playing, i'm not interested. the truly F2P experience was my initial draw for STO. at this point in my life, in no way shape or form am i so hard up for gaming that i'd be willing to "pay"--either time or money--for something like that.

Eh, that's the nice thing about RIFT for me. I don't have to pay to play, and if I want to spend money, I can't buy anything that isn't available for regular users to get outside of experience boosts (which last for only an hour.) So anything that you purchase is a helpful thing as far as time investment, but even then the best in slot stuff (and even the raid level stuff) isn't available without actually doing that content. So somebody can't just buy their way in.
