Disagree with what? The part where I said that music/games don't play a large part?

And Germany also has very restrictive laws regarding ownership. This is a Country where you have to prove your need for a gun. The laws they have are essentially what Obama and the reactionary fools want. You sure this is the example you want to hang your hat on?

the problem is, the UK has similar laws on gun control, and they are NOT working there. so clearly, it's not the laws on guns that are working. (at least, i can't draw any connection there). the UK has 4 times the per-capita violent crime that the US has, even though it has about 1/4th the per-capita homicide rate (this is for all homicides, not just those involving firearms; so not an apples-apples comparison). germany has about half the per-capita homicide rate that the UK has--for reference.

the point i'm trying to make here is that there's so very little direct correlation in this realm. i also tend to believe that "mass shootings" tend to happen more exclusively in countries with large populations and higher levels of gun ownership; though it's not cut and dried. norway has less than half the per-capita gun ownership of the USA and barely 5 million citizens. on a per-capita basis, the 69 people killed in the 2011 shooting would be the equivalent of 4,347 US citizens dying in such a rampage--more than the total number killed on 9-11.

brazil has 1/8th the per-capita gun ownership of the USA and over 4x the homicide rate. compare that with germany's less than half the gun-ownership rate & 1/6th the homicide rate. japan has half of germany's homicide rate, less than 1/100th the gun ownership (of the USA), and yet has some of the most violent and gory games and anime ever imagined.

bottom line here is, i favor ENFORCING the laws we have on the books, and ENFORCING strict regulation on the behavior of owners (such as requiring proof of owning a gun-safe before a gun can be purchased). this isn't much different from how car insurance is handled with respect to a driver's license. i also favor holding the gun owner culpable if said firearm was used in a crime and was NOT reported stolen at the time.

that said, restrictions in the type of weapon, the magazine capacity, etc--should not be any more restrictive than they already are. imho, if it's semi-automatic, and you pass all the checks, you should be able to own it. period.

That's the stance of everyone in this thread. I really haven't the foggiest what you think you're accomplishing.

To address the ban in the UK, gun crime has dropped since 2003, every year. This is all encompassing, air guns, and fake guns as well. Now, do I think it's absolutely the ban? Not a chance. Statistics in the US have also shown a steady decline since the late 70's...and we don't have their oppressive laws. So, a ban isn't the answer, WHICH EVERYONE HERE AGREES WITH.

Brazil? Well, you're right back to education as I've said 53 times. It may be a massive Country, but it's quite rural, both physically and the mentality of many citizens.

Japan? Do you think I'm oblivious to the gun law there? What a ridiculous argument. For anyone that doesn't know, you basically aren't getting a gun there(absolutely no rifles or handguns). The permit, and guantlet of paperwork is purposely designed. Ammo? You better be able to account for every round you've ever fired. Again, this is the argument you want to hang your hat on? Sure about that? You keep painting pictures of societies that have absurdly restrictive laws as your argument. Japan gun law makes the UK look like the wild West.

In any event, no one is touching your video games. Relax.

I'm amazed there's still some politicians left in that state with some common sense. I'm extremely glad I'm no longer a resident there, for a lot more reasons than just gun laws.
