My photos, per request.

unless someone asks me to critique their work, I subjectively look at it based on what I feel it looks to me.

if my first emotion is that I like the photo, I tell the person the photo looks good. nothing more. if the person asks how he/she can improve, then I put my 2 cents. unless they ask, it's just a photo they took as a hobby for fun.


not everyone is looking for critique where they need to check their settings, the background, the time of day when they shot the picture, etc. for most its a hobby, not an obsession. for some of us, we get paid to do it and have to be more mindful than the average shooter.

Taste varies, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but a blown shot is a blown shot.

I get your point in so far as what moves you but I'm sorry I disagree with telling someone a shot is good when it's not because it doesn't help them grow. The average Joe may think a photo is decent or even good, but the average Joe may or may not know dick about photography and thus their opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.

Pointing out flaws has little or nothing to do with appreciation of work, just as appreciation of the work has little or nothing to do with it being good. This is not specific to this thread or these pics but in general.

I never ask if folks like a shot, I ask what is wrong with it.

And that's why I stated the difference between what I, average Jane, finds good in a photograph vs. what another photographer finds good. If I think it's a good shot, I'll say so. But I get where you are coming from. Since I don't have the 'technical' experience, I won't comment on a photo that just doesn't work for me, because I cannot tell the photographer what exactly is wrong.

Don't ever make excuses bro. Your shots are your shots... They were the best you could do at the time, so don't knock or make excuses for yourself. All we can do is learn and grow. I am always suspect of people that have nothing but nice things to say about my work. Either they aren't looking, or they don't know wtf they are talking about. There is ALWAYS room to grow, learn, improve, and get better..and no one has it ALL figured out.

Comments like this only discourage. If anything, I have less of a want to go pickup a camera now. I wasn't making excuses. I was explaining how the shot was taken with what I had at the time that the shot was taken. I think that with 2-3 day experience (especially with a DSLR), that these photos are pretty damn good. Secondly, as a general rule of thumb I always follow, only judge shots to the standards they were shot at unless asked otherwise. I was not taking these to high standards, I would expect them to not be judged to such.

In anyway did you say something positive about any of the photos? So how have you encouraged?

All I am saying, is change how you "critique". Comparing how you want to be critiqued is not they way everyone needs to be critiqued.

Grow thicker skin or don't show your work. Life isn't about rainbows and butterflies and I'm not going to hold your hand and bullshit you.

I wasn't holding you to any standard other than that of a properly exposed and framed picture. You were not judged on artistic merit, in fact you weren't judged at all actually. There is a right way, and a wrong way and it's as simple as that.

There is nothing wrong with the critique you got and everything wrong with your attitude. Learn to take criticism and grow from it. Don't get defensive, don't make excuses, and don't claim that someone else killed your drive. You think I like every critique I get? Hell no.. Suck it up and use it as fuel to do better next time..

the thing here is that he was not looking for critique. someone asked for him to post some pictures he took and that was that. unless otherwise indicated, people posting their pictures here are posting for the sake of sharing, not for critique.

its not about proper exposure or getting the framing right or getting the photograph "right". its about sharing photography as a hobby.

you can give your two cents, but like photography, there is a right way and a wrong way to do that.


now lets move on guys. pick up that camera and have fun!

I think this best sums up the thread. Blindmist is new and is making great strides fast. Mike has been doing this for a while now and supposedly as a profession, so yes there will be variances in skill level. Mike chill out and give it in doses. He's learning and doing it well, but let him do it at his own pace. Hell hes had the camera less than a week.

Blindmist- I look forward to seeing you progress in photography. You have a good start, but like mike says you still have areas that need more practice and work. Join a photography forum and post up pics here often. We'll try to be easy on the critique. Right mike?

It's his FIRST TIME you smart ass! He didn't post for critique. He was asked to post up what he had from his FIRST experience. The fact that you posted up your critique wasn't so bad, but YOU PERSISTED to try and prove your point when obviously he wasn't looking for it. He asked you to stop, and yet you persisted more. NOW with your last statement you try to come off as the victim in your all knowing holy understanding of art??? Grow the $#@& UP!
