It just occurred to me that you would have caught this if you do like I do. I leave the returns off the pan side and prime the motor until oil comes out of them before startup.
I do it a little differently... I leave the plugs in, have everything ready to run, prefill the oil filter, bypass the oil cooler,(so I don't have break-in oil hanging out in there after the first oil dump) crank it with a remote starter until I get oil flow to the heads,(checking for flow out the lash adjusters under the oil fill cap) then light it up...
With no oil cooler to fill, and a full filter, it usually just takes a few seconds to get oil pressure.
