Yes you should have...
I was rooting for Akron vs Tennessee... that would have been hilarious...

Greg Davis is really lighting shit up in Iowa!
The B1G is what, the 5th best conference?
SEC > B12 ........ > PAC12 > ACC > B1G
The gap between the 2nd and 3rd best conference is vast. The depth of the B12 is deeper and the average B12 team is better than the average SEC team, but none of the B12 teams are elite this year... imo.

So far the Big 12 looks better than the SEC this year. Just sayin'.

But it turns out that Michigan team is really lousy... But not as bad as Arkansas (minus their QB).
Michigan 41-14
Western Kentucky 35-0
Arkansas 52-0
Florida Atlantic 40-7
They will destroy Ole Miss... Mizzou looks like a shell of its 2011 B12 self. I saw bits of the SC vs Mizzou game and I couldn't believe how tentative the offense was.
Outside of LSU, Auburn in the final week might be the toughest game. A&M could challenge 'Bama a little, but I'm not sure A&M will have a healthy QB by then the way they use him to run the ball.

I understand. They just look very disciplined and ridiculously talented (as usual). I think they're the team to beat.

You know what scares me the most about K-State? Doerr. He really made the difference in that game. OU was pinned inside the 20 on all 5 punts(twice inside the 10). That's phenomenal kicking. JMU did that to us, hang the ball high and long, forcing Tavon Austin to signal fair catch every single time.

Alabama has a hilariously easy route to the MNC this year, but they aren't unbeatable in my opinion. They have some weakness in the secondary and their offensive line play has been suspect at times. I think Oregon or WVU would have a real shot at knocking them off. In fact, I think WVU has a real shot at going all the way as long as they don't pull a WVU this year and lose to some team they had no business losing to.

Yeah, that was huge. Field position and possession is K-State's answer to the up-tempo offense... And it really worked against OU, who never got into a rhythm. Which is part of the reason I think Texas has a reasonably good chance hosting WVU.
Seeing Alabama's schedule makes me appreciate the 10 team B12 even more. There are no free rides. 6 B12 teams are ranked; OU, OSU and KU are the only teams with a loss and KU is the only bye week. Unbalanced schedules are bullshit.

On a better note, our punting was much, much, improved this week. Average of 47, and a few over 50 yards. Kick off was another story...TWO out of bounds kicks. That pisses me off to no end, and will absolutely not work in B12 play.
WV's o-line has to stay consistent, plain and simple. Maryland blitzed the hell out of us, disguising several different looks, and they were pretty successful with it. They made us pass, and rattled Geno. They knew we couldn't get anything going in the run game with Alston out(thigh bruise), so they sold out bringing a 6th, or more, man to the box. This let Tavon get 1on1, and is why he lit them up with YAC. Stedman wasn't much of a factor, they made it look like 1on1, but one of the corners, and a lot of times the safety also, was cheating up. Thankfully, we have two all-American receivers. You can't stop both of them.
Bring on the bears...

Besides, it's a financial windfall for the university. $300M over 20 years.

I watched the game Saturday, but was distracted with other things as well. My brother went to the game and told me he was getting pissed at the lack of protection the O line was giving.
Maryland definitely played us tough, like they do every time. Hopefully Holgerson rips some new assholes this week and the boys come out to play hard on Saturday.
Speaking of Saturday, my mom is trying to locate me some tickets for the game as a birthday gift. Not holding out hope, but it would be badass to get to go. Hell I haven't been to a day game in a LONG time. I've hit a lot of primetime games recently.

That's the problem though... Neither Dish nor DirecTV carry it, the only way I can get it is with AT&T U-Verse, as I don't believe Verizon Fios is up and running where I am yet. Still not sure I'd pay extra for it either, but I'm definitely not going to switch my accounts for one freaking channel.

Maryland's blitzing was very effective. No excuses, the o-line was just soft. Eger managed to get himself benched for the whole 4th quarter.
I've never seen Holgorsen so pissed off. He was ripping Geno and the whole offense constantly. That poor, poor, headset. My mom said she heard on the tv, by the announcers, "Holgorsen just told his players to get their heads out of places we can't repeat on tv".
If you score a ticket, text me. I hang out in the purple lot, over the hill, behind Ruby. Was a good secret, but more people are figuring it out now. I'm usually one of the 1st people there. This week there was 35+ people there at 8:40 am!

We did and apparently AT&T has shipped in dozens and dozens of technicians from all over the country to meet the demand in Austin. I can't say it's been a seamless transition (the first router they gave us was better at pumping out heat than a wifi signal), DVR didn't work the first time I depended on it, but our tech (from St. Louis) has been very available and very helpful.

once it gets off the ground, these networks don't stop. The big 10 network is great. The cable companies knew once this happened they were screwed, they couldnt compete.
If someone was really thinking they would have been the ones to start them. Texas is big enough to pull off its own network though.
But channels that actually cater to their fans is a great thing. Before you would have to sit around and wait for espn to throw you a bone. Espn hates the big 10, they knew if they didnt get in bed with anything else coming out they were going to face more and more competition. They had to make sure they ponied up for LHN... Texas had em by the balls im sure...
Its free money for the schools, well its money they were losing out on before..

Well yeah, but if you buy them from the University that's more money in their pocket. I try to support the athletic fund first, if possible. However, I doubt there'll be any unsold tix come game time. :)
Those seats are 5 rows in front of mine. Very good seats, and a very good price! $100 a ticket is less than you can even maintain those seats annually. It would cost $120.71 for each of those seats, per game, at the minimum donation level. Those would be 7 and 8 seats from the aisle.
Also, the stadium map is misleading. Those seats are directly across from the ~10 yard line. The aisle between 102 and 103 runs right with the 5 yard line. Still, yes, they are incredible seats.
EDIT: This is the view from my seats.

rofl stanford loses to washington... the same old pac 10... scrubs can beat anyone in the division.
I hate to say it but it seems there is no division where the top teams are safe from being beat by lower teams maybe with the exception of 1 or 2 teams in the SEC, which is part of why the SEC is always in the Championship.
Goallie11
09-28-2012, 04:14 AM
I've thought Stanford was highly overrated, just because they beat USC doesn't mean they're a good team, it means USC isn't that good. Stanford and Notre Dame have jumped too high in the rankings these past weeks.
DK77 is right, the only reason the SEC is the "best" conference is because they have really 3 good teams that beat the others up and pundits think oh that means those teams are really good.
There's only one bad team in the big 12 and that's kansas.

I saw 2 games today worth watching and just finished the 1st one: Baylor @ WVU... here are some quick thoughts before I forget them.
- Sorry for all the texts in the 1st quarter J. I was just excited and you said something about defense being played :D
- The second quarter was when it really turned into flag football and Baylor scored in the final seconds... I think Florence was past the LoS but the refs reviewed it...
- Tavon Austin fell down like 3 times today... Seemingly ALL while celebrating long TD's or completions, LOL
- WVU's strength in the trenches was the real difference in the game. Both O's were absurd, but Baylor never got pressure on Geno while WVU got a few key sacks and brought a lot of pressure, at least in the 3rd quarter which ended up being the difference.
- WVU sells beer at their stadium? Lucky #$&@ers :)
- Smith to Bailey, deep, was truly unstoppable. Even if the throws weren't perfect (they all looked perfect), Bailey did whatever he had to do to catch them in stride. One of them was EPIC: looked like a deep post. TWO Baylor defenders hot on Bailey's heels. Bailey let up, looked side to side and seemed to put his hands out as if he had no idea where the ball was. He sold it perfectly. He either practiced this or REALLY did lose the ball. The Baylor defenders let up and suddenly Bailey was 3 steps ahead of them catching ANOTHER TD in stride.
- WVU didn't seem like they could run the ball against Baylor. Not that they tried that hard or that it mattered.
- WVU's freshman safety, Joseph, really flashed a few times. Two GREAT solo tackles in space (on a day when no one was tackling, so they really stood out) and a great play in man coverage on a slant at the goal line.
- WVU's THIRD best WR, Woods, who had ONLY 100+ yards, made a SICK 1-handed catch in the final minutes to help ice it. I think WVU has 3 WR's that would be starting at Texas, shit Baylor has 2 or 3 themselves...
That's all I got. Time to start the other game worth watching today... :)

Yes, in hindsight, I absolutely wish I had brought my wife and kids. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt I did not even consider it based on people I trusted providing first hand accounts. I will absolutely be waving the flag that those incidents are overblown, and/or were completely isolated incidents.

My "twin" in the picture mentioned this... He rated you higher in terms of welcome to opposing fans higher than Nebraska, which in deed is a high standard.
That's a pretty big deal. Nebraska is widely known as being the nicest fanbase.

Like Jeremy said, a lot of the stuff is way overblown. I live literally 10 miles from the football stadium so I hear a lot.
I am sure everyone remembers the reports from last year of a WVU fan throwing a rock at a LSU fan's car then there was a fight, and so on and so forth. There were reports everywhere of how terrible WVU's fans were to opposing fans, etc, but when the wife of the guy who got beat up came out and said it had nothing to do with them being LSU fans since none of them were wearing LSU gear and nothing on the car noted they were LSU fans either that was not reported nearly as much.
I went to last years Backyard Brawl and watched a Pitt fan pick a fight with a group of WVU fans minding their own business, but I bet you he went around saying he was attacked by a bunch of drunk WVU fans.

WVU in a blowout win.
Last year we were young outside at DE and CB. This year we're young up the middle after losing a SR DT, 2 SR LB's, and Gideon. Who knew we could be missing Gideon? But yeah, the middle of our defense is confused, out of position, and then tackling poorly. It didn't help that our best LB is injured and we lost a starting DT early against OSU. And our best RB got hurt early too -- glad we've got 6 of them... So from young to younger we go! Lots of defenders got their first REAL playing time against OSU. Defensively we're a mess for sure.
If I had to guess, I'd say WVU beats Texas by 7-10. There's no way it's a blow out because we're going to score a lot too. Last I heard, Vegas predicted Texas winning by 6 and the over under appears to be 75. Free money for ya, Tyla :)
That Oklahoma State team is going to be brutal for ANY B12 team, especially in Stillwater, assuming the loss to Texas didn't deflate them too badly... WVU gets to experience that soon enough. Mack Brown claims that's the most physical OSU team he's ever seen... I'm inclined to agree. They have 2 of the best corners in the B12, they had beasts all over the field on O, and we couldn't run the ball against them except out of the wildcat.
BigTyla
10-02-2012, 02:01 PM
Let me clarify blowout. I say they win by at least 17. Not that Texas is bad. I think they're a great football team that's just starting to find their identity. I expect WVUs defense to pick it up this week after last week's abyssmal performance. Something tells me they'll be pumped for this game.
I feel you on the youngness. It feels like we're younger than last year too. Only 6 starters are seniors, and we just moved two freshman to the top of the depth chart.
HilbillyHomeboy
10-02-2012, 02:30 PM
Mack Brown claims that's the most physical OSU team he's ever seen...
He also said WVU looks like Texas and USC when they won their respective national championships.
And...
Poor tackling again plagued Texas in an escape at Oklahoma State. By Brown’s count, the Longhorns missed 12 tackles resulting in 109 yards and two touchdowns.
“It’s obviously affecting us right now,” Brown said. “We’re going to have to look at playing different people. We have enough video of guys that continue to miss tackles.
“We’ll give up 70 this weekend if we don’t tackle better than we did Saturday night.”
Both of our fullbacks are hurt, one of which is our feature back. Hopefully he makes it back. I doubt they'll be any stopping him from playing, he'll want it too bad.
Yes, our pass defense was beyond dismal. However, we completely shut down Baylor's ground game. I think that's the key to the UT game, as well. We'll let you have the pass plays, within reason hopefully lol, as long as we can shut down your running attack. Granted, this is a MUCH more potent ground game than Baylor.
I'm expecting an aerial shootout if Ash continues to perform like he has.

Let me clarify blowout. I say they win by at least 17.
I could certainly see that, but let's be realistic here... WVU beat Maryland by 10 and Baylor by 7. You think 2012 WVU beats the 2011, RG3-led Baylor team? That Baylor team found a way to lose 3 games in the B12 because they couldn't stop anyone.
Not that Texas is bad. I think they're a great football team that's just starting to find their identity.
Far from great, still searching for an identity... The good news is that the offense has options. The bad news is that the defense was supposed to carry the team.
I expect WVUs defense to pick it up this week after last week's abyssmal performance. Something tells me they'll be pumped for this game.
I expect the same from Texas. This should be the loudest Texas crowd of the year.
I feel you on the youngness. It feels like we're younger than last year too. Only 6 starters are seniors, and we just moved two freshman to the top of the depth chart.
Texas depth chart vs WVU shows 4 senior starters... 8 on the entire thing.

Salubi started off well, but you guys definitely tightened up rushing defense as the game went on. Your defensive front in general, got much better in the 2nd half. I'm sure you'll load up to kill the run early and we'll run right into it to see how you hold up to a power running attack. Our plan will be to hold the ball as long as possible and, I assume, concede some runs from Geno if it means getting pressure on him. Vacarro has been killing QB's when they scramble, so Geno will need to slide like he did against Baylor.

Great summary of Texas offense vs OSU
My preview was correct in breaking down OSU's personnel (particularly noting their upgrade at DT), but I was dead wrong on their predicted defensive strategy. Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Bill Young abandoned his usual bend-but-don't-break philosophy, killed the Longhorn running game for three quarters with numbers and blitzes, and dared David Ash and the Longhorn receivers to beat top notch cornerbacks placed on islands. Which Texas did.
Harsin pulled double duty as OC and DC and, as against Ole Miss, we saw him consciously play call with our defense and the total team in mind. Harsin robbed possessions from the OSU offense, particularly in the second half of the contest when it was clear that the Cowboys would score every time they had the ball. OSU only had five possessions in the second half and scored on four of them (27 plays, 251 yards, 9.3 yards per play, 2 TDs, 2 FGs) the only non-score when they took over with 0:29 seconds left in the game on their 25 yard line and the defense finally got a stop. In that half, the Longhorn offense had the ball for 20:32 compared to OSU's 9:28 and scored three touchdowns in five possessions (Ash interception, one punt).
Despite racking up 440 yards and putting 34 offensive points on the board, it wasn't all glory for the offense. I wrote in my preview that this game would be a great litmus test for our OL - can they impose their will from the opening whistle on comparable athletes or stacked fronts? - and we found out that answer is no. Which we probably already suspected. That means any decent team that wants to deny our running game can if they're willing to allow the Longhorn passing game some operating space. But the better Ash and our receivers play, the more cloudy that calculus gets.

Texas Tech = very close loss

Yeah, Smith is going to have a HUGE game against Texas.
All I'm hoping is that we can limit the monster plays (I promise, they will happen) and force WVU to play offense in the red zone. We held OSU to more FG's than they'd kicked all season combined, and that was the difference. The good news is that 3 of our 5 best defenders are DB's (Diggs, Vacarro, Byndom) and while our DB's aren't very physical, neither are WVU's WR's. We shouldn't be getting TRUCKED like we were against OSU... All the rest of our talent on D is on the line. Hopefully we can get pressure up the middle because while our DE's are immediate draft pics, Geno will get rid of the ball before they get there.
I'm just hoping we can get away with only having 1 or 2 LB's on the field at all times. If that means an extra D-lineman or extra DB's, I think it's much better because we're hopeless at LB right now :(
As for predicting the rest of Texas' season... The only one I'm sure about is the loss to K-State, haha

We beat teams by taking what they give us. That's the great thing about a QB that can read defenses, and spends every waking moment watching film. Hell, he even made an audible that wasn't even in the playbook(which went for a TD) because he saw something in the D he could exploit. The kid is very intelligent.
Baylor let our stud receivers get behind them. What's Geno supposed to do when he sees that? Check down to the bubble? The same reason Baylor torched our secondary. Our cb's played too loose(playing 10yds off Terrence Williams is just asking for it). Baylor took what we gave them.

Look for a true freshman, #88 Clay to get some carries(played a lot last week, but only blocked). Holgorsen says he's not a fluid runner, but is doing pretty well in practice. Possibly Ryan Clarke also, but he's got a perpetual case of fumble-itis.

If we win that, then it'll be...we'll know more about WV after they play K-State. Which is fine, we feed off of doubt(see all 3 BCS bowls we dominated).
I wouldn't rub it in, well too much anyway. After that, it's just a feather in the cap. Regardless of how good Texas may, or may not, be, going into Austin and coming out with a win is HUGE. If you beat Texas, the only reason there would be any doubters is because your schedule is legit. TCU losing their QB certainly helps but that was one of the "easier" games anyway.

Comparing Texas and Baylor is basically pointless. They are two totally different machines. Power run vs. spread to the extreme. Defense-wise, sure. Baylor's defense is just about nonexistent. We know what UT defense is capable of.
Our o-line is better this year with Josh Jenkins back. Though they did play down to Maryland. I wouldn't be expecting to see a repeat of that performance. I'm just not sure if Spain and Eger are up to the task of fending off Jeffcoat and Okafor. That's the key match-up to the game, IMO. If they consistently get beat, we'll have a lot of adjusting to do, that probably can't be accomplished in the course of one game. I'm more comfortable trying the gut, than the edge.
I hope UT wins the toss and defers. I want to test that defense asap to see what works.

Scipio's thoughts on the 8 keys to Texas beating WVU
DEFENSE
Rush Four.
Mostly. Bill Connelly does a very good job of breaking down the statistical argument, but here's the subjective one. The Air Raid is built to exploit defensive insufficiency. Most college defenses are masking a personnel deficiency in at least one unit. As a coordinator, you compensate with numbers and/or scheme. A slick spread offense does exactly what the name suggests - it makes you spread out your defense, declare your intentions more plainly, and makes you rob Peter to pay Paul.
Want to take away the run and get pressure? Bring numbers. But half of West Virginia's offense is nothing but screens, well disguised pick plays, shovels, draws, fly shovels, and hot routes with instantaneous reads, thrown by an accurate QB on auto-pilot, to receivers that murder you after the catch. Some fans like it because "it's aggressive" but it's also kind of dumb.
So play coverage and bring three. Geno Smith now leisurely examines your defense while pausing to emery board his nails and throws to as many as five pass options all expertly schooled in flooding zones, extending routes, and experience Hive Mind with their QB. He's not reading your defense. He's surveying it. You're praying for an errorless offense to make a mistake running six second routes against a drill skeleton. Good luck, I guess.
As with Goldilocks, four is just right. Bring four - in whatever permutation - and you prevent an immediate automatic read made from muscle memory because you can challenge the shallow routes that are WVU's sustaining force without losing help over the top. Bring four because eventually, fairly good pass rushers will get there. Bring four because it marries well with what we should be running for 75% of our snaps. Which brings us to....
Dime Personnel, Man Under
If we come out in a 4-2-5 nickel bringing extra men with Cover 3 behind it, I will put my remote control through YOUR screen. That's right. It will first travel through my screen, through the electricity thingies, through a network of cables and/or a satellite parked outside of our atmosphere, and erupt from the screen in your home.
Also, I do not understand physics well. Or electronics. Or the nature of matter and energy.
West Virginia hasn't been challenged in coverage. And they can't run like OSU. And their physical mismatches are built on quickness and speed - not size or physicality. Our guys can look like the defense we thought they might be when they're able to simplify reads, focus on one slice of the field, know that there are safeties with their back so they can get up in some asses, and focus on the man across from them. Instead of executing the flawless choreography of feints, disguises, stunts, and gap switches that has so far worked only on Diaz's white board.
Man up West Virginia's receivers. Or at least Austin and Bailey. Place two safeties deep (say Turner and Thompson - their orders are clear - NONE SHALL PASS). Vaccaro and Phillips inside. Diggs and Byndom outside. Vaccaro and Phillips are also able to act as run forces and screen disruptors and Diggs and Byndom know that there are two guys behind them tasked with nothing but having their backs. You're man under, zone deep. The initial coverage prevents easy, quick throws and the layered coverage prevents easy 3 step drop deep timing routes. Geno Smith will have to hold on to the ball, face a real pass rush, and make some real throws.
So how do they cripple our pass rush? That brings us to...
Watch Your Fly
With West Virginia's Shawne Alston out, the running load goes to their scatback Andrew Buie. He's a great receiving threat (another reason to play 5 DBs) and it appears at times that any back with a pulse can run on us, but he's not going to win the game for them. What can kill us in West Virginia's use of Tavon Austin in the fly sweep. His ability with the ball in his hands paired with our inability to pursue at LB inside to outside means that Diaz will have to make Okafor and Jeffcoat check the fly. And they can roll protection to the other side on the OL. And guess what? Most of the time, they'll just fake the fly sweep and throw it. But now they've frozen out our two best pass rushers. This is yet another reason to play dime coverage. And move Jeffcoat around liberally. In dime man under, Austin's motion would be mirrored by his guy. He's not the DEs problem. Their job is pin back their ears and make Smith come to on the charter plane home as if he'd been Roofied. Speaking of...
It's Not About Geno
No, that's not the name of a delightful new pilot from ABC about a working class Italian family with sassy kids, a wise Mom, and an ineffectual Dad who puts syrup in the toaster BECAUSE MEN DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO ANYTHING IN SITCOMS!!!!
I digress.
Smith is a delivery platform. He's a good one. But anyone who utters the platitude that Geno Smith must be pressured no matter the cost or no matter how many men you have to bring must be ignored. They don't get it.
When Bill Belichick's Patriots played The Greatest Show on Turf St Louis Rams, he realized that Kurt Warner, while very good, was just a delivery platform. Marshall Faulk was the key to the Ram offense. Everything else was noise. He assigned a specific man to Faulk in every defense, man or zone and told his defense to hit Faulk every chance they had. He took away Warner's favorite outlet and security blanket, and crippled one of the great offenses of all time by making them play the game left-handed.
We will lose this game on defense because of what their two Faulks - Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin - do to us. Not because our looks against Geno Smith are insufficiently complex.
OFFENSE
Pound The Rock, Then Over The Top
West Virginia uses three DL to form the rock of their run defense, surround them with some active, smaller guys to get pressure, and use their safeties heavily in run support. Consequently, they will hang their corners out to dry as a 9.0 YPA allowed will attest. If we can run the ball sufficiently so that we can continue to give David Ash the clean one-on-one reads that he has been getting with Davis and Shipley over the last two games, then we're in tremendous shape. Our run staples will be inside zone, pin n pull, and we'll do it out of quite a bit of Pistol. The fly sweep will be huge, not as only as constrain to prevent them from squeezing our inside zone (stoppable by simple defensive calls), but also because we want Daje Johnson and DJ Monroe playmaking against a defense that's going to have quite a bit to think about. One of them should break a big one.
West Virginia isn't as good a defense - at least personnel wise - as OSU. And we can't afford the 2nd and 3rd quarter lull that we experienced in Stillwater. Even when we're establishing our running game and trying to wear them out for a big 4th quarter, it's important that we be able to go over the top such that their corners have to play off coverage and basically concede some 3rd down and short conversions. if WVU wants to play suicide run stopping, you have to make them pay. Forget Time of Possession. That comes later.
Play For 6
Mack is usually great about going for it on 4th down despite a Texas fan base that weirdly won't acknowledge it. Aside from bludgeoning those people with math, our lack of a reliable field goal kicker, or our offense's newfound acumen, I'd contend that it's not just 4th and 2 on the 35 yard line that's a clear go-for-it. So is 4th and 7. Not even a discussion, in fact. And if we do it, even if doesn't work, we should be wildly supportive. Attack every possession as if it's the game-winning drive.
SPECIAL TEAMS
We're not going to win at placekicking. But we need to at least get a draw on kick coverage, net punting, returns. Trust Nick Rose and Alex King to do their things. If we must squib, study their actual personnel so that it goes to a blocker, not a threat. A punt block or a kick return is our most likely means of impacting the game substantially in our favor.
FINALLY....
The Crowd.
When we're on this blog, we can be detached and analytical. Even critical. But when we're at the stadium, our role is unabashed, maniacal fan. Fuck your folded arms and detached manner. When a Texas crowd pulls together and coalesces into one giant organism of enthusiasm and energy, it's an awesome sight to behold. No, it won't happen against New Mexico or Kansas. But when the stakes are large and the stage is center, Texas fans impact football games. I've seen it. I was there. Whether the 1990 UH game that I attended with a crowd energy bordering on murderous, to countless Texas-OU's, the Michigan and USC Rose Bowls, to 2008 Missouri.
If you're going to the game, make a fool of yourself. If the crowd puts West Virginia on silent counts, disallows audibles, and prevents their center from getting his calls to the offensive tackle, Texas Fan is worth actual points on the scoreboard.
If our defense makes a great play, go nuts. If our defense makes a bad play, go nuts. It's not about you and your expectations. Help the team. Make it about us.
Hook 'em.

I would suggest UT shelves that fly sweep, for this week. Your chances of running are through the middle. You don't want lighter, quicker, guys pursuing you East and West. Plus, that's a play that our defense goes against every week in practice. Also, when WV runs that, don't think it's going to Austin exclusively. Stedman gets that call from time to time. I wouldn't be surprised to see Woods get it either. WV ran it a few times last year to Willie Milhouse with good success.
Totally agree with rushing 4. UT brings only 3, and WV will run it successfully with Buie and possibly Garrison. Or worse, Geno will have eons to make the hot read and burn it over the top.
I hope WV tries some power run with the Clay kid. Really hoping to not see Ryan Clark at FB(touching the ball anyway, he's a pretty good blocker), the kid is just not dependable to not fumble. Would like to see the delay handoff come back also. Works very well because the defense immediately goes into pass prevent mode.
LOL at our offense being dumb. Okay, Nick Saban...

He was saying trying to bring numbers to pressure the passer against your offense is dumb.
And I'll believe WVU can consistently stop our fly sweep when I see it. We use it and fake it in a lot of formations, to a lot of different players. Sure, it goes negative from time to time, but it's been a very consistent moderate to huge play for us.

The sloppiest game WVU has played, and the bulk of the slop is on Geno. 2 fumbles, one that paid dividends for UT immediately.
Our D has proven they can stop the run. When I started screaming...when UT burnt us twice on the TE wheel route. Corner blitzing and not accounting for the open receiver. That play obviously needs some work. Biggest surprise of the game for me? Pat Miller. Punk finally stepped up.
In any event, ridiculously happy to come out of Austin, in front of a record crowd, with a win. Next stop, Lubbock. :)

LOL! Yeah, I bet that play drove Mack crazy. WHO called the timeout and WHY?!
It says a lot that mike watched this game and thinks Texas lost because of David Ash. We're watching totally different games, apparently. Ash did everything we wanted him to do. He can't make Bergeron catch that 4th down pass that hit him in the hands/chest. The only thing he did wrong at all was get the team to the LoS too late when Texas had a chance to take the lead late. The resulting fumble falls into this "shit happens" category for me. I thought it was a great game, and it played out exactly as I expected. Disappointed because we had a chance to win, but we're still building for the future. We'll get revenge next season, J ;) Kristy really wants to make a trip out of it.
22/29 for 269 (76%) with a TD and only 1 sack is getting the job done. 165.2 QB rating in the 2nd worst game of his season so far... I honestly couldn't be happier with the leap Ash made from last year. No one saw this coming.
1. Geno Smith, WVU... 202.4
2. J.W. Walsh, OKST... 181.2
3. David Ash, TEX... 180.1

Ash did just fine, overall. He's really maturing and UT will be a force next year. WV won the game by making UT 1 dimensional. Totally took away the run. We allowed it co be close with JD Woods dropping 2 td passes, Buie tripping over the 20 yard line, and Geno fumbling twice. UT lost the game by running man coverage with two deep. With that coverage, UT was begging us to run, and we did, in a BIG way. I kept waiting for the adjustment, and UT never did(except in the 4th, but it was too late, WV flexed their muscle and still got it done on the ground). In their defense, there's just so many weapons to account for in this offense, you pick a poison.
Yeah, come on up, you'll love Morgantown. :)

There are plenty of people putting this one on Manny Diaz (our DC) for failing to make the adjustment and failing to have LB's ready to play. The D-line got a lot more pressure than I expected. I honestly, seriously hope you guys can keep it up and win an MNC. You certainly look better prepared to do it than any other B12 team right now. Your battle vs K-State will be an awesome clash of contrasting styles.

I was very happy with our o-line. They laid down against Maryland. People were putting way too much stock in that performance(what I kept saying before this game). Spain did spectacular against Jeffcoat. Eger, I thought would get destroyed by Okafor. He actually did pretty dang good. Okafor caused both of those sacks with fumbles, but Geno was in the pocket for quite a while, so I can't put that all on Eger. Yeah, your d-line did very well. LB's were non-existent.
KSU will be a challenge, for sure. Can't wait. But, we have to take care of business in Lubbock first, and TT defense isn't too bad. After getting whipped by OU, I'm sure they'll be motivated. One game at a time... :)

Jeremy
AdamVR4
10-09-2012, 03:08 PM
the #1 pass defense(TT)
09/01/2012 Northwestern St. W (44-6) 500 84 - Garbage team
09/08/2012 @ Texas St. W (58-10) 591 270 - Garbage team
09/15/2012 New Mexico W (49-14) 702 127 - Garbage team
09/29/2012 @ Iowa St. W (24-13) 395 189 - Solid D, awful O
10/06/2012 Oklahoma L (20-41) 360 380 - Solid D, underachieving O (regardless of opponent)
The best passing team they played (OU) is ranked 41st in passing. You're going to light them up. TT is a pretender, for sure. The only reason the spread is close on that game is because it's in Lubbock. After you guys dismantle them, people will remember just how bad TT was last year and we can stop hearing about their top ranked defense.

Until I see otherwise, they're still the team Texas straight up rolled last year, when we couldn't score against anyone other than Kansas and Tech... 595 total yards, 439 rushing yards (8.1 per carry), 52-20 beat down.

* 7–2 against Texas A&M
* 0 losing seasons
Tommy Tuberville, 2010 & 2011: 13-12 overall, 5-12 in the B12
* Tech did worse (5-7) in 2nd year of Tuberville's system

only blow out win:
2005: 45-12
and again, mike has such a superficial understanding of the game that he puts this on Ash. Did you see all the key 3rd down drops, particularly from TE's? Only one of those INT's was on Ash (the other came on a hail mary to end the 1st half) and it never happens if Marquis Goodwin (one of very few seniors) doesn't give up on the ball. We couldn't get our defense to the side lines because we have a giant gaping hole in the middle of the field. This was supposed to be a top 5 defense and it's apparently one of the worst in college football. This was supposed to be a power rushing team and our starting RB's went 12 carries for 17 yards. At times, I thought Ash did an incredible job avoiding sacks to deliver catchable balls only to see them dropped. Ash wasn't good, but he's a true sophomore and needs a supporting cast. Even the 2004 Vince Young team that beat Michigan in the rose bowl got shut out by OU. There's something like 52 players on OU's roster from Texas and apparently they care about this game more than ours do.
Aside from the embarrassment in Dallas, the beat down in Lubbock was surprising and so was Baylor losing to TCU's 2nd string QB.

Just to add to that, when you take out sack yardage, Texas is allowing over 7 yards per carry to BCS teams. There are very few metrics that don't indicate this is the worst defense in the history of Texas football. In 2006, we set all kinds of records for pass-defense ineptitude only to break all those records in 2007.

I only got to see a few brief moments of the game. What happened? I saw the wind was around 20 mph, typical for Lubbock, and Geno was completing a little over 50% of his passes. Is Tech's defense for real or was it a freak game like Tech beating OU last season?

For a SEC team Florida has a pretty easy schedule this year. If South Carolina or Georgia doesn’t beat them (both home games in the swamp) I don’t think they will get beat until Alabama beats their ass in the SEC championship game. Florida State isn’t going to beat them.

The excuse I remember hearing during the pre-season was that 2011's Tech team had a ton of injuries. That could explain the rapid turn around.
Texas not only got beat down by OU, but got injured like crazy. Jackson Jeffcoat's season is over and David Ash's wrist is allegedly NOT broken, but man it looked bad. Our best run stuffing DT (Moore) was taken to the hospital and is questionable...
It's looking pretty unanimous across the interwebz... Mack Brown needs gone.

Their defense is for real. They play on assignment, every snap. It's pretty damn impressive. They are never out of position.
But, that's not entirely why we lost, err should I say got smashed. Geno let the wind get to his head, and was just "off" all game. One of the biggest fails was Geno not running. My lord, it was open and open, and open some more, and he stayed in the pocket. Huge disappointment there, and he actually admitted it in the post game presser. We didn't tempo really at all. I don't understand that.
We failed to set up a proper run game until the 2nd half (of which was a stolen formation from OU).
The damn announcer noticed something from our offensive tackle, Quinton Spain. MF'er wouldn't shut up about it, and it made its way to the booth(s). Spain has a very specific position with his back leg for run or pass, apparently. He also does a sweep with his head if it's a pass. 100% readable and accurate every time. Dana had to get on him about it, and he never corrected. That's got to change, as now everyone knows it.
Our already piss poor defense suffered some key injuries, which definitely didn't help.
Also, we can't stop a TE, or a wheel route...EVER. This pisses me off to no end. Exactly what Cuse did to us last year, UT burnt us a few times, and Deforest is making no adjustments. I don't understand his defense, at all.
It was obvious even in warm-ups that the guys didn't have their heads on straight. Everybody looked like they were high. Just pure complacency.
Hate to tell you, Adam, but Tech's defense is for real. Tubby has those boys giving a yeoman's effort every play.

Nebraska fans... Do you miss the B12 yet?
Mad Chatter, Sept. 12 | sports.omaha.com (http://sports.omaha.com/2012/09/12/mad-chatter-sept-12/)
“I don’t know if it’s still lingering depression from the UCLA game or seeing what the rest of Big 10 looks like this year, but I’m starting to finally lament the fact Nebraska left the Big 12 as it stands today. What if just Mizzou, Colorado, and A&M left and we stayed. Then throw in TCU. Now you have ten teams in the Big 12 like this season but the Huskers are in there. How much do you think fans would kill to see this slate of games annually?
“I know we all hate Texas, but man if we had stayed, the OU rivalry would be back on an annual basis, and we would get that shot at Texas every year, along with our old Big 8 friends KSU & Okie-State. Heck, look at what it would be if just Colorado and A&M bailed. Throw out TCU & put Mizzou back in the mix. I know it was a good move for the university financially and academically, but you can’t honestly say as a fan you are psyched week in and week out for the fixed schedule we have in the Big 10 (yawn) vs. would could have been now if Nebraska stayed in the Big 12. …
“There’s no one to hate in the Big 10. That is a problem. There are plenty of characters(villains) to hate back in the Big 12, and that just fueled the passion of the fan base. I’m starting to see more and more of an apathetic outlook from Nebraska fans. I think a lot has to do with not having any teams in our current conference to focus the hate towards. … I loved that Mizzou, KSU and even KU hated Nebraska. I loved the back and forth with their fan bases. That passion and spirited debate seems to be dissipating every week and every season, and that is sad to see. Now we just debate among ourselves about how bad or good we really are more so than at any time I can remember the last 30 years.
“Hindsight is always 20/20, but as I run through this in my head the more frustrated I get. For a man as reserved and patient as Dr. Tom appears to be, I’m surprised he didn’t step back and play out what I presented above in more of a long range outlook. Maybe he did. But if he did and this is what we are left with, then wow. That would be a huge fail. Leaving because of the Texas threat or perceived threat is kind of weak looking back. Our best revenge on Texas for me would have been staying the course in Big 12 (the TV money was eventually coming) and start earning respect on the football field and start beating them at a more consistent pace than 1 out every 9 tries.
“If you can get buyer’s remorse from switching conferences I think Nebraska will start to finally feel that this season. To reference Eugene Levi (car salesman) speaking with Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) at the car dealership in the beginning of “Vacation”- he thought he was getting the blue sports wagon, but ended up with the Wagon Queen Family Truckster. “You may hate it now, but wait ‘til you drive it”. In the case of the Big 10 it’s the opposite- “You may love it now, but wait ‘til you drive it.”

WVU is almost in the same boat, except the Big East is failing fast. I mainly mean in the rivalry department. I don't hate Texas, TT, Kansas, OU, OSU, etc. Hell I normally would root for any one of those teams, unless a loss helped WVU. We don't play Pitt, or Cuse, or Cincy, our Louisville any more, but I still love to root against them.
Oh, and I will root against Nebraska almost any day, no matter what conference they are in.

Big 10 has proved tough for Nebraska... And the Big 12 was on the edge of the abyss...
They will be fine. They were thinking things would be easier in the Big10... they learned it isn't...
Nebraska fans are bummed because they aren't winning like they would, they wouldn't be any happier if they were getting beat in the big 12.
And the Big 12 isnt looking like a dominant division itself... Sure Kansas State looks tough, but they only beat oklahoma... Lets see how they do against wv.

Iowa and their impotent offense led by former Longhorn throw-away Greg Davis, is in 1st place in the "Legends" division. They lost to Iowa State, arguably the 2nd worst team in the B12 (unless Texas beats them in the race to the bottom).
Study this for me mike.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/adamvr4/lulz_zps321b2070.png
The B12 has never been stronger than it is today and I can't remember the B10 ever being worse. If this were the B12 of ~2007, Texas would still be en route to a 9-3 regular season, instead we're staring 6-6 in the face.

If Iowa State had a little more offense, they would be a real contender. Their defense is pretty damn stout. I am not looking forward to that game.
On paper, the match-up with WV for KSU is a nightmare. The run is our only remote defensive strength, and they obviously love to run the ball(though, admittedly, Klein's arm is much improved this year). Their pass defense isn't real hot, and we obviously love to pass the ball. Throw in a pissed off WVU team(I hope), and it could be a helluva tough game for KSU. But, I don't have a lot of confidence in WVU after the disaster in Lubbock, so we'll see...*fingers crossed*
Jeremy
I don't think that quote has fully captured what the situation is. Do some of the Nebraska fans miss the old rivalries in the B12/8? Certainly. Oklahoma was the only real great team that Nebraska had a rivalry with and it would have been nice to play them every year had things shook out like the quote said. But who knows if all the other teams split had Nebraska stayed. I still feel that the B1G is a better fit for Nebraska than the B12. The Nebraska-Iowa rivalry is only one year old, I think it has great potential since Lincoln is a hell of a lot closer to Iowa than Colorado.
I think the real root of the issue of the dissapointment from the fans is the fact that the football team is just plain not as good as we expect them to be. There is the talent there but I wonder what keeps screwing us up? For some reason Pelini doesn't have the guys playing very smart football, the team makes far too many mistakes. I don't know if it is overall inexperience or if the coaches aren't getting the guys fully prepped.
I also don't think that you got a good idea what Nebraska football is supposed to be like from the years that Texas and Nebraska were in the B12 together, Adam. Over the past ten years Texas has really had Nebraska's number, but then agian during that time period the Huskers have been the worst they have been since the late 50s. Basically, the majority of Nebraska fans expect to be winning conference chapionships on a regular basis and expect to be ranked in the top 10 most of the time. Under Tom Osborne the Huskers won conference championships in more than half of the season he coached. Some of the Husker teams during the 90s could be considered among the top college teams ever. Basically compared to what Husker fans expect, 9-4 seasons will not be sufficient, and getting blown out like against OSU (doesn't matter who the opponent is) is certainly not acceptable.
Plus I think we have already developed some great intrigue with the B1G teams already. We got revenge on Wisconsin after they made us look silly last year and OSU got their revenge after we managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against them last year. Give it a couple more years and we will have developed enemies in the B1G just like in the B12.

Thank you for the well thought out response. Exactly what I was looking for.

What sort of evidence would you need? A round robin? :stickpoke:
During OOC play, the B10 was a running joke. You just admitted that basically every major program in the B10 is rebuilding. Mean while, Texas and Kansas are the only programs rebuilding in the B12. One of the worst teams in the B12 beat one of the best teams in the B10 and Sagarin has the B12 as the #1 conference while the B10 is sitting at #4. If OU beats ND, who beat basically every team in the B10, will you be convinced then?

Yes, their schedule is ridiculously easy this year, but then again, it's not their fault that the SEC West is down this year in a big way.
That said, it seems like every team they've played this year has had their key player(s) out for the game. Michigan had three starters suspended. Arkansas' starting QB was hurt. Mizzou's starting QB was hurt. I'm not saying they would have lost any of those games, but it certainly makes winning a lot easier.

I agree that Florida's resume is more impressive. I think two things resonate with voters concerning Alabama:
1) They are defending national champions. I've always said that defending national champions should be #1 until beaten. I think the voters are giving Bama extra points here.
2) They have beaten all of their opponents soundly, and by soundly I mean they've beaten them so bad they've had the second and third string teams in by the beginning of the fourth quarter. That includes vs Michigan.

I think it's because they've looked like shit. even that SC game. sure the score looked impressive but that's only after SC spotted them 21(or whatever) in the first half. they'll roll allover us this week and to those that don't know UGA they'll think, "Holy shit look what they just did to #10" and not know that UGA only had a 10% chance of winning going into the game just because UF is ranked. hell it'd probably be less if you factored in recent history.

UF will win the East and get destroyed in the SEC Championship game. I'm talking by 35 or more. you just watch.
I wouldn't bet against any of that. Also, the week before the SEC CG, they're playing (on paper) the toughest game of their season @ Florida State. Mean while Alabama gets to go all OU-vs-Texas on Auburn that same weekend (Nov 24).

Rumor on the street is Jon Gruden has been hired at TN pending Dooley's resignation:
Tennessee Hires Jon Gruden (http://8thmaxim.com/site/forum/vols-football/5841-tennessee-hires-jon-gruden.html)
That could be pretty awesome for Tennesse fans

SON OF A F*CKING B*TCH!!! If this is true I'll shit. Yet another better coach goes to a rival. if this happens it'lll be back to getting blown out by UT every other year in Knoxville. Meanwhile we'll be stuck with beating all the unranked nobody's and losing when it matters most. But the Richt supporters will continue with the oh but he won 9 or 10 games and went to the "Who Gives a F*CK Bowl". drives me nuts in case no one noticed

They've been saying that forever. I'll believe it when I see it.

The hire is feasable. After all, his wife was a Vols cheerleader.

I'm not suggesting it's not plausible; just that I stopped buying into message board "done deals" many years ago. Hell, not too long ago(as in within the last 2 months) they were talking that they were gonna get Holgorsen...
Until I see an official announcement, this is my stand:

That is cool. Not sure how they're getting 8 TD's for Geno. I'm assuming they're talking in conference, and he had 8 just against Baylor. Perhaps it's total for 1 game?

Everything I can find on that site says 26 TD's for Geno. You looking at yards per attempt or something?
