View Full Version : carbon overlaying wheel spokes

i got the wheels back at the weekend after getting some cracks on the rims welded so i started to buff them down and prep them up for the refurb 8-)
painted a base coat of black on the spokes ready for the carbon. so tonight got in from work and marked out a square sheet of carbon cloth and cut it ready to lay on the spokes. layed up the resin on one wheel and had my dinner :D about an hr later it was tacking up so i could sart to carefully lay on th ecarbon and cut and wrap as i went. thats one wheel ready to trim tommorow before laying up another 4 layers of surfboard resin on top, then the sanding begins :(
after that i will blend in some custom paint i have in mind(about 3 different layers of different effects) around the rims and edges of the spokes, the carbon will show on the frot of the pokes and fade to paint around the edges.then it will be fit the tyres, touch up any damaged paint and 3-4 coats of laquer, job done :D will take a while but should be worth it in the end

Sweet deal! Only set I've ever seen done like that.
Nice one man, I recently thought about putting fake carbon vinyl wrap over my chrome volks to see how it looked but never got around to it. Look forward to the final outcome...

Sweet deal! Only set I've ever seen done like that.
Might be because it will throw the balance off. Hopefully the tire shop will be able to balance them. It might not be a big deal but I would be a bit concerned about it.
It's looking good though

Does anyone know where the supplies can be purchased for things like this, I've been interested in overlaying some CF on a few parts but can only find vinyl CF not actual CF and what kind of resin is used?

hopefully the wheel balance wont be too much of a problem.its only gonna be about a 3mm layer thick over the spoke areas then painted on the rims then full wheel laquered.my wheel should be able to let me know.its really just like putting a thick paint coating on them or powdercoat.
the resin im using is a poly surfboard resin.epoxy would give it a better bond but the poly flows easier and im used to working with that.made sure i wrapped the cloth round the spokes and im going to resin right round them aswell to prevent any delamination.then about 5 coats of laquer on top of that so should hold up to speed and not break up.
try us. composites for resin, theres loads of places do cloth and resin supplies.check out fibreglassforums.com for info

finished work about 4 today so got stuck into the other 3 wheels and layed up the carbon on them, all masked up ready for 1 coat of resin the i need to remove all the masking and trim the carbon up,re-mask and give another 3 layers of resin before i start the dreaded sanding process.going to plan so far. next months wages will be spent on paint. ;) panther pearl black, candy red and laquer

I don't think balancing will be a big issue. It is amazing what a wheel shop can do with a grinder...
assuming that there's relatively equivalent amounts of material applied to all the spokes, balancing shouldn't be a problem.
scoob
02-20-2011, 12:36 PM
yea thats what im hoping. 4 layers of resin evenly brushed on and then sanded flat should be ok,well i hope ;) you never know until you try these things and im a trier haha

I hope so, I don't think it will be as big of a deal just doing the spokes.
They remind me of these.

Coopkill has CF looking paint on his valve cover. That could be another option for people wanting this look.
Edit: I don't know if you could get that CF 3D look from that though.

If I would have done the base powder coat in black instead of silver my intake and covers would look just like this:
http://f00.inventorspot.com/images/CF2.img_assist_custom.jpg
I chose the silver because it "popped" more to the eye...

I took them to the guys that do Scott goggles, STB Coatings. They have a wall of water film transfer designs that I stared at for over 40 minutes. What I picked up was no where near what I had in mind when I first went there.
I sometimes wish I would of done the True carbon fiber look, but then I open the hood. lol
Call a bunch of local to you powder coat companies and see if they do water film transfer over powder coat.
If you can't find anyone and must have something similar, PM me and we'll see what can happen.

I actually thought and researched shaving them, but in the end decided not to...
are you going to do the rest of your bay? IC pipes? intake pipes? fuel rails? :p
CoopKill
02-20-2011, 09:02 PM
Nope, I have to go with bigger rails. I might do a battery cover to balance the cf look in there, but the rest of the plans are polished stainless not created yet...
thanks to duTTch and linchpinjoe, polished is SO overplayed. :p

ive already done the valve cover in real carbon, had to use a heat resistant resin to lay it up,also did the intake plenum but it was very hard to lay on the curves so i wasnt happy with it,that paint effect looks the dogs tho ;)

heres some pics of the work on the wheels today. trimmed them off and buffed down the centers and edges of the spokes using a dremmel with a small sanding tube attachment. then i sanded one full wheel down with a 2'' disc on my air sander 120 grit then 240 grit.its a long process so when i get through all the wheels to that stage ill start with the wet and dry and get it down to a 1200 grit before masking up and painting the whole wheel.

just a quick update, had a nightmare of a time getting the wheels on:( got them balanced with no problems then went to fit them and the socket wouldnt fit the hole where the nut goes so i had to buff down the outside of the socket to fit the wheel nut hole.all going well i got the left hand wheel on then went to fit the right hand front and jacked the car up ,heard a loud clunk and thought wtf . the spring had snapped:( checked the other side and that was the same,2 snapped springs. ive got a set of replacement struts coming now with tein springs on them so this will fix my ecs problem aswell as the left hand strut cable was damaged and stuck the ecs in sports mode. im getting there slowly but surely and the show season starts at the end of the month, loads to do and time counting down:(
ill get pics up when srted and wheels fitted ,their looking good 8-)

haha just found out they had snapped when i jacked it up;) ive had the car out twice since the winter and thought it felt sus on the handling, could of been scary.
Thats weird man, never heard of anyone breaking springs by jacking up their car.
kinda makes sense though. if it hasn't been driven in a while (or jacked up) the springs might be "used" to the compressed state. jacking up the car adds a "shock" to the system (pun intended).
