So I disassembled my TC tonite in order to replace the spool. It appears that the ring gear has spun on the spool at some point. No evidence of spinning on the spool surface, just the shoulder that the ring gear is pressed to. Anyone have an issue with this? I measured the new spool @.001" larger.
So I have to reset the bearing preload for the spool and lash for the ring, any idea what the preload should be at?
Thanks

I searched for this info a while back. Here is what I found:

The transfer case
Clearance on the gears is .001 inches
preaload on the spool bearings , I leave them so you can turn it with about 8 inch pounds . of course that is without the output gear installed . The output geat tappered bearings: This is almost impossible to get a consistent reading with any measuring tool because of the size of the big nut . The way we do it is to tighten the nut until you cant turn the shaft (this will get rid of any slop in the bearing races and set them in their place) . Then you back off the nut untill it bearly starts to turn, one 1/4 turn at a time , then tack weld a small bead on the nut to keep it from backing out .

btw there are no specs published about the transfer case that I know of.

Hope that helps.
