View Full Version : Replacing turbos

I am looking into learning about replacing the twin turbos on my VR4. It contains 16g turbos and has Series 1 AEM Electronics. There is an Apexi gauge and an HKS boost controller, and a turbo timer also installed. The exact names of those are on a build list in my garage page.
What I want to ask and learn about is the following:
I am pushing 600HP with 12psi of boost. I am looking to put over the years 1000hp before I'm all done with the engine. For now, I am looking to get around 600-650HP but I want to also increase the amount of torque as well. I believe I am producing 404ft lb based on the paperwork that came with the vehicle but it is not the most accurate numbers I got in terms of HP and torque. I believe I may have 400-500ft lb torque but do not know how or even when I want to try to find an accurate number for this. Is it fesible to place slightly larger turbos in the vehicle? What should I be looking at performing on my vehicle to increase the torque and HP?
My end goals for the engine will be 1000-1200HP and at least 800ft lb of torque. This isn't needed for many years, but slowly and surely I will achieve it. I will want a 300M steel drive shaft and a twin disc clutch with pedal stop as well for that.

If you actually have 16Gs, 12psi isn't anywhere near enough to make 600hp on them. You would want to look at turning the boost up before going bigger.
Your best bet is to get the car on a dyno and see what it's actually making for power. You may need bigger injectors to increase the boost, but it's well worth it as 16Gs are really going to shine at 25-30psi. Look at improving your current output before deciding you need bigger.
As far as driveshafts, there is no 300M driveshaft, there are aluminum and carbon fiber options. 300M is what upgraded output shafts and input spools are made of.

He's probably thinking about 300M rear axles, but after he buys them from DSS he'll get a shock when they are weaker than stock axles and they won't warranty them.

In order to get better performance, pay somebody to do it for you.
Aren't you the person with the nitrous question, browning shift dildo and the space age steering wheel?

Emerald... your question is incredibly naive... you gotta do some research. You're way off base right now.

Seeing as you just messaged me regarding what the red wires were in your engine bay, which are your spark plug wires, you just need to shut the hood on that car and step away.

I know I don't understand much about cars in general, but I wanted to buy a 3000GT VR4 as that is my dream car. I also did not want to buy a stock one either, I wanted one that was this complicated to take care of because that is what I want. I am committed to using any resource I can find, I may ask "naïve" questions in time but I don't care, I have already learned a lot about the 3000GT since owning it, and I won't give up until I understand everything.

If you're asking questions about spark plug wires you have a long way to go before you need to be messing with turbos.
Learn how to do general maintenance (oil change, plugs and wires, timing belt) and learn how a 4-stroke fuel injected engine actually works before you touch anything.

I understand the concepts to how turbos and the engine in the 3000gt works. I may not have the hands on experience, but since owning the vehicle I have installed a quick release hub for the wheel, a 4 pt harness, and I have been taught how to properly perform an oil change on the vehicle. I know how to change the coolant and a few other minor things, but I wrote this thread to try to learn about what others are doing to increase the HP in their 3S's. I want to take that info and explore why people are doing what they are doing to their engines to increase the horsepower and torque.

Do a clutch change without breaking anything then you can pretty much do anything in a 3/s except know how to tune it. If dropping the trans is too intimidating you aren't ready for big power.

Generally an engine will make more and more tq and hp when adding airflow. More air needs more fuel so you have to have a stout enough fuel system to support your added intake volume. Next is making sure that parts dont end up on the pavement after they punched a hole through your oil pan. You make sure that doesn't happen with a solid tune and the right combination of strong engine internals. If your car has 16g's and an AEM you should be able to make 500 awhp with a dash of race gas and a good 20 psi tune. There are other bolt on TD05 turbos (TD05 is the type, or design of turbos, they are built by Mitsubishi) that would flow more air and make more boost than stock 16g's but yet again you would have to look at your fuel system, tune, transmission and TC modifications. These cars aren't supras. You cant just bolt on a turbo kit and an IC and injectors and pump and make 700 awhp. It takes a well thought out build to crack 700 hp with the 6g7x engine let alone a thousand.
There are dozens and dozens of threads of people who say they want 600+ hp and only 5% of them actually do it. That is probably why you aren't getting a lot of support of your goal in this thread. Search for Trevor's build on 3si it is well documented, see what it took for his car just to run mid 10's. Broomfield's car was probably the simplest car to run low 10's (only 7xx whp) but he had like 6-8k into the engine and probably the same in the driveline.
Stick around and read all the threads you can and try and learn what everyone has done to achieve their goals.

So I have adopted the mindset, as "I want my engine to produce 1000-1200 Horsepower with around at least 800FT-LB torque (or similar, whatever is safest for that ammount of HP), so it is going to happen!" After about 6 hours of internet searching, calling places, researching turbo systems and racing vehicles, I've come up with a few parts to start off with, and am still only in the researching stages. These include adding a water/methonal injection kit, and I want a 100% custom video/audio entertainment system so I WILL make it happen, regardless of what others say. It's my VR4 and I want at least 1000HP and a custom video/audio entertainment package for a passenger so I will make it happen at all costs. Why cuz thats what I want and I don't care how difficult it is to make it happen, because it will happen.
I got a few Garrett Turbos that I have put my eyes on getting, haven't come to a decision on which one exactly yet, but will in time.
Looking at Twin Disc Clutches, possibly an OS Gilken Carbon -Ceramic racing clutch.
XS Power AGM Battery D2400 12Volt, unless I really feel the need for a 16volt, I'll stay with a 12volt
I will upgrade/sidegrade from Wisco pistons to Ross ones.
I am adding an AEM water Methonal Injection Kit for my engine, along with upgrading from Series 1 to Series 2 or Infinity AEM
I'm starting the research into Overhauling my transmission, keeping a 6 speed, hoping to add an overdrive gear as well, new transfer case, gears, and anything else to help with never having a second thought on wondering if my xmission will break or incur a problem from a hard launch. I've only started some research into making this a full blown demon of a 3000gt, and I have many many hours of researching to do before I start gathering the parts I need to make it happen, but it is happening.

Start a build thread!
I gotta admit, a custom audio/video system sounds pretty sweet man!
I would go 16v, that way you have more amps.

You still have a shit ton of research to do. You are not going to add an overdrive gear to the 6 speed. As it is a 6 speed is geared to reach ~240 mph at 7000 RPM. That means 120 mph is attained at 3500 RPM in 6th. If you need something taller than that, then there is something wrong with you.
Also, as said, you are not making 600 hp at 12 psi. It's just not happening. You need to go for a ride in a real, true 600 hp car before you even think of trying to attain 1000 hp. A good friend of mine had your same mindset of wanting 1000 hp. He went for a ride in a 600 hp car and almost shit his pants and rethought his ambitions on 1000 hp.

I don't think a single person on this forum drives a stock car except for Curt, who only comes here to advertise for umg.
Hell, I bet I have the most stock drivetrain on the forum in my race car, lol.
Emerald, my advice is to actually turn up the boost to a more manly setting before swapping turbos. Until you get to the point of wiring the wastegate shut, you're not to the point of needed a larger turbo. I suggest breaking the decade plus old 16G record set by Adam, that'll give you something to reach for. Until you run your car at 25+ psi, don't go telling people you have a 600hp car, because you don't. By then you'll know everything you need to know to reach your 1000hp goal. Then you can throw your 16g kit away, buy some dr1400s and a stroker, and actually have a shot at the title. Anything less than twin gt35r for your goal is a pipe dream, you're never going to get there with a td05 flange.

I could probably spend a lot of time in this thread, but I am not even sure its serious. One thing I wanted to make a point of is, if you expect to make 1000AWHP and have a drivetrain you never give a second thought you better go buy a different car. Something with 1000AWHP that's warranted...like a veyron.

Someone needs to take the OP for a ride in one that has a verified 700+AWHP, and see if he still wants to shoot for 1000 after cleans his shorts...
I'm sure the first time he busts all four tires loose at 80+mph and has NO steering, he'll reconsider his plans.
I have always subscribed to the "there is no such thing as too much horsepower" theory, but if it's a street car on street tires, there is a point where it just isn't all that fun anymore...

Y'all are just jelly that the OP has some serious goals!
Id trust my little sister to pilot a 1000hp car, there is NO driver skills involved!
Look at Ray Pampena, Trevor and Matt Monet, just average Joe's. They woke up one morning and bolted on a turbo kit, easy peasy.
You guys need to stop trying to talk the OP out of this, he's set his goals and knows what he wants!

Hey Emerald, I am not sure what part of the country you are currently in, but from reviewing your posts, if you recently bought a modded vr-4 (or any vr-4) recently, your absolute best bet is going to be to find someone local to you that is in the know about high performance turbo cars in general and watch / learn from them. There are vr-4 owners all over the country, but even if no one is local to you, there is bound to be somebody that has tinkered with a car or two. There is a LOT of stuff you will need to learn and experience before dealing with 600+ HP. You may be able to pick that info from the internet, but without trying a good bit for yourself, it will be almost impossible to figure out what is BS and what isn't. I recommend finding someone local to you, reach out to them and ask for a lunch and learn to get started down this road. VR-4s are not the most simple cars to deal with so getting straight answers from someone willing to provide them will get you farther along than just questioning the web.

Just a little more proof to tell you that you aren't making 600 hp on 12 psi
http://3squicklist.com/dyno.html
Jay Belknap known on the forums as VR4ever made "only" 513 hp on 17 psi on 16g's, and I would bet he had more additional mods than you have.
We're not telling you what we're telling you to piss you off, we are telling you to correct your misunderstanding. Seriously, go for a ride in a true 600 hp car then come back.

15(ish) psi with heads, cams, AEM, and a quality tune would get you slightly over 500. 600 at 12 psi on e316g's is not even remotely realistic.
