Are you talking about where people change out their shifter bushings with bearings??

someone smoothed the rectangular piece inside the shifter assembly (in the trans) and said that it made for smoother shifts.

I have a really notchy shift. I always though it was due to my Ralliart short shifter but since I never drove with a stock shifter it was always just an assumption. Since I have the trans apart right now replacing the output shaft I will have to check out the bolt Toni mentioned and try David's fix to see it it helps it at all.

I'll have to give that a try sometime.

I might have to try that. I wish he would have posted an after pic to avoid confusion though. I think he still posts on another forum I’m on. I might have to ask and see if he has one.
oops, posted this on 3si also lol
I took a look at this last night. As I posted in the thread I just don't see how this would help. I even put together my spare case to get an idea of what's going on. My cage didn't even touch those corners until it would have stopped at the reverse lockout cam. Maybe I am missing something or perhaps this only helps when the cage is worn and loose. Mine was solid and had little to no play.
Hard to argue with some of the results people are seeing though :)

FWIW I had way better results just replacing the selector assembly inside the trans than I did messing with anything else. Right behind that mod, I'd say to use solid washers to mount the cable bracketry on the trans. The shifter base bushings in the center console also made a nice difference, but mine were really worn out.

You tried this mod first?

No, but I see no reason to try that. No offense to Colt, but I don't see that being an issue. Parts wear out, replacing the whole assembly brought me back to an "as new" state and it was less sloppy feeling. Not smoother, just less sloppy.

Ok so I did this and wow, It is like night and day difference. I did accidentally drop my spring into the trans and had to pull it because of this but say la vie. There are 4 edges I ground down so they would not hit any of the cage. The edges have nothing to do with wear, they are there from when the part was made.

Not my photo, my phone got covered in coffee the night I had to pull the trans. I rounded those down so the center piece was more circular. The shifter has 2 more on the other side I rounded down while I was at it too. You can see that in certain areas they stick out of the cage, i just rounded it to where it was inside the cage at all times.

That was my falt, I forgot to grease the spring when I rebuilt my trans. Yours should have a little grease on it from the factory still that holds the it on. I would recomend using one of those small magnetic grabbers from autozone to grab the spring just for safety.

I did/am doing mine today. Just need to reassemble it. I had some definite friction from the shaft meeting the cage, held it up to the light and could just barely see the interference. Grinded it down a touch and played with it, much smoother. Not perfect, but didn't want to pop out the roll pin to do it and it's still significantly smoother than it was. We will see how it holds up when the tranny is put back together.

If you are worried about them being worn out, buying a new one is pretty cheap.

For those who don't, or avoid, visiting the other forum, here is my results.
Unfortunately my camera has apparently gotten jacked up at some point and can't focus properly so I don't have great pictures of the end result.

That's all I can provide at this time. For me, it has drastically smoothened the action of the shaft. My transmission is new to me though I cannot provide a before and after of it.
