I've always used Valvoline wheel bearing/axle grease in the cardboard tub. It's thick, but it clings like you wouldn't believe. I just coat the shaft and splines a bit past where the seal is, and also rub some inside the spool. I've done that annually for the last 4-5 years, and my output shaft and spool still look like new.

I use synthetic wheel bearing/axle grease. It might be valvoline. I've had the same tiny tub of it for YEARS now and I use it on the output shaft, input shaft, TOB and clutch fork fulcrum. Obviously I use a very thin film everywhere except the output shaft -- where I'm extremely libruhl

I have some of the Valvoline stuff, I know exactly what you're talking about. Pickle, how many miles did you put on it before checking?
