Seat belt spring

While I have the interior stripped out, I thought I would try to fix the seat belt return. The passenger seatbelt will not return into the mechanism all the way without being "coaxed". I thought there was a how-to on fixing this I'd seen somewhere. Does anybody know what the cure is?

All I needed to do to make my belts return freely was clean the plastic guide & swivel where the belt rides. Spraying the belts with Armor All worked as well, but I have no idea what the long term effect that will have on the belt, so I wouldn't do that unless you're desperate.

Tried that already. Didn't help. It will reel in all but about 10 inches easily. Then you have to "help" it.

Sounds like you need a new mechanism, unless you can somehow (pretty dangerous, mind your fingers, eyeballs, and anything else you value) wind the spring up a few turns.

get sand paper and try to "widen" the seat belt slot

I've got the whole mechanism in the floor of the car. It's not the seatbelt guide. It's in the mechanism.

Besides tearing it apart and cleaning everything, lightly greasing the rotational bits then putting it back together, I don't have anything else to add.

When you tear it apart, is there anything I need to watch out for?
I figure, I'll give it a try. If I screw it up, I can get another one. Which is where I'm at now.

Make sure the spring doesn't "pop" and... I don't know really, I only ever unbolted one briefly.
