I need help to identify shift forks in Getrag 6 speed transmission

    Hi guys.

I was shopping for transmission parts today and need your help to get my vr4 on the road again

I need help to identify those shift forks.
They are from the Getrag 6 speed gearbox for VR4.

I mainly need to know which is the shift fork for 1st to 2nd gear
But it's not bad to get to know them all.
Also, if there is something missing from the shift forks in this?

    All of them.

    Which serial number is damaged?

    Forks should be stamped XXX.X.0653.90.
    XXX.X.0657.90
    XXX.X.0661.90
    XXX.X.0665.90

    Which one is damaged?

I'm not sure if this had been made public before but the serial numbers are the steps in the gear engagement. Generally the lowest number is for the 1/2 fork next would be for the 3/4 fork and etc. So your lowest number will be the 1/2 fork. In this case it will be the XXX.X.0653.90 stamp. 3/4 would be the XXX.X.0657.90

BTW. Someone should add that to the 3S Wikipedia .

Looking at the bellhousing. 446.X.0653.90 is closest to the bellhousing and then the forks are sequentially stacked. The second one from the bellhousing is 446.X.0657.90. The third one is 446.X.0661.90. The one closest facing in the picture is 446.X.0665.90.

Pay no attention to the position of the bottom fork. It's not pinned. It's a spare I just put on there for sequence illustration. I've broken two 1/2 forks and have a collection of them . If you need parts just let me know. If I don't have it, I can get them pretty quick from Jack in Colorado Springs. We cool like that .

Pay no attention to the position of the first fork.

Here's a pic from the back angle so you can see the distance from the shifter glide to each individual fork position.

Just took these photo's about an hour ago so that's about as up to date as you can get.

Thanks alot for your help J. Fast

What happend to my VR4 is at one point i coult not put it in 1st or 2nd. If i shift gently it sometimes goes into 1st or 2nd. If i manage to get
into 1st it wont shift into 2nd right after. 3-6th and rewerse are fine. So the 1st/2nd shift fork must be failing somehow.
Those forks i have pics of here are what a got from a friend with a 6speed trans partout.
I needed to know If the 1st/2nd shift fork was one of them. Looks like the fixed one is the 1/2 shiftfork if 3sx can be trusted.

    I have another question.
Can the shiftforks get replaced without pulling the transmission out from the engine/ Clutch ?

    Sorry for my English.

You should talk to jacksTransmissions and look at getting the billet shift forks.

That 3sx pic is a little deceiving. The 6-speed 1/2 shiftfork is not fixed (atleast none I've ever seen), it has a roll pin. Go by the serial number on the fork unless it's a billet cut fork. Whomever you decide to order from make sure you get the serial number. As for the billet forks, Supercar and Jacks sell them for around $350 (for the full set) last time I checked. You can also get one machined for about $150.

The roll pins get a little sloppy when you remove and reinstall them so I wouln't do it with the trans in the car if that's what you're elluding to. If they are even a little loose it's possible for them to spin and expell themselves from the gearbox chattering or the excitation of the gearmesh. They'll eventually worm their way out of the alignment hole so you have to make sure you flare them.

When the alignment pin drops out or starts to work it's way forward you'll start having problems with paired gears on a hub assembly. You'll eventually start getting getting blocked out of a gear and/or it will get really notchy and lock into gear.

I have a picture of a gearbox I rebuilt some time ago that had really bad blockouts. When I opened it up I found two of the roll pins had started to work loose. Luckily they never came out free and clear or it could have been disasterous had they wedged between the gears.
