Just to get it started:
I work in the Oil and Gas drilling industry. Im called a Drilling Fluids Engineer, but im not an engineer by any means.
They use a fluid, called mud, while deep and im responsible for that fluid: which means weight and chemical properties of that fluid are to be maintained and adjusted according to the depth we are on and the depth we want to reach.
Its basically all down to cost and planning.
