Thanks for the support guys. My brother got the engine out and the old one ready to go back in. Salvaged some of the pretty bits at least. Hopefully I can get it buttoned up this weekend when I get home, and start tearing apart the dead engine. I guess I'll drain the oil and pull the head first. When I pulled the dipstick it came out black with a very familiar golden color...

I got a metallic fro going on:

    In the drain pan:

The old engine is back in and running. I'm having some trouble getting all of the air out of the cooling system, but that's easy enough. I need to swap a tie rod, get it aligned and get new tires on it this week. Back to Oregon next week and then autocross a day after I get back. Tight schedule!

Welp. Tore into the engine. The head looks ok. Needs a VERY thorough cleaning, but otherwise looks ok.

1/2" thick of metallic sludge in the pan.

Windage tray is also full of metallic sludge. The Oil pump is packed with metallic crap too.

#1 rod cap is on the left. It got VERY hot... Probably because there was literally no bearing material left. #4 is on the right with whats left of its bearings.

    #1 rod journal is trashed.

    #4 rod journal... trashed.

It lives on all four cylinders! Mostly... I was out on a five minute tune to make the tweaks for the header and the car just straight up shut off, tach dropped to 0, etc. Looked over at my laptop hooked up to the ECU and it was reading 0 RPM even though the ECU still had power and the engine was still spinning at 3 or 4k RPM. Weird... Parked it and started messing around with the distributor and didn't notice anything wrong. Called someone for help and it magically started right back up after hanging up. Called them back and drove home... Strange.

I played around with the idle tuning a bit and drove to Advance to pick up some unrelated stuff. I actually got to jumpstart somebody with the GTI! It's normally the other way around, haha. It pulls pretty darn hard, lights em up rolling into it in first, and spins into second still, even with the LSD. The real test will be after I get it aligned on throw on my new tires.

Also... all of my subframe bolts were finger tight. Oops.

    Freedo aligned

My new tires next to a set of wheels my brother just picked up. The Rivals are a bit wider than Falken RT615K's.
