there's no resolution to that! should have at least had an ipad mini going down in a ball of flames as it crashed into the "death star" (i.e. steve job's ass).

Here's a great read for those interested. David Kappos, Director of the PTO, gave a great Keynote Address to the Center for American Progress, covering many things but spending a decent amount of time on software patents. It's nicely objective, but it also responds to criticism without sounding too defensive.

    An Examination of Software Patents

    And my favorite line:

It’s time for the patent system to man up.

It seems they understand the complications and complexity that comes with software patents, and it's nice to see that they believe in pushing for improved quality throughout the system. The message appears to be directly aimed at those that have little faith in the system because they only read the glorified headlines.

    One argument he makes:

But it’s important to note that, during the so-called smartphone patent wars, innovation continues at breakneck pace. A system like ours, in which innovation is happening faster than consumers can keep up, cannot fairly be characterized as “broken”. Nor can it be said that the U.S. is just a receiver of all this innovation. Most of the innovation is taking place right here.
Is a good point. While our patent system isn't perfect, I certainly don't desire any other country's setup. Hopefully things continue to improve right here at home.

replace "patent system" with government system" and it still holds true.

At Chicago-Kent, our IPLS has hosted two discussions called "Patent Wars" ... we had some promotional material made in a similar vein:
