    Where should I start?

I'm looking for advice from those that have done 3000GT VR-4 rebuilds before. I have a '92 VR-4 that is in bad shape - the engine threw a rod (requires a rebuild, I believe), and I already have the engine out. The car is missing a transmission, so I'll need to buy one there.

I've had this car for a while and finally have the time and money to work on it. I understand this is a long term undertaking and will be expensive. The big question I have is - when you are rebuilding a car from what is likely the ground up, where would you suggest I start? Should I rip out everything and start with paint?

    Suggestions welcome!

Paint isn't a bad idea...especially if you don't like the condition/color of the engine bay. Apart from that, I favor making it mechanically sound before engaging in cosmetic work.

When you say "from the ground up" do you mean you're rebuilding the engine and touching up the rest...or do you mean you're literally stripping everything off the frame and giving the entire car an acid-bath and starting factory-fresh? I can make a few recommendations, but it does depend on how in depth you want to go. The method is a bit different for someone who wants to bring a car up to acceptable working condition & clean it up....vs someone who wants to see their reflection in the rear differential.

I'm thinking "acid-bath and starting factory-fresh". The condition of the car is very terrible. It's hard to find any part of it that either doesn't need replacement or needs a complete overhaul. My thinking is such that since I already have the engine and transmission out, and I know for a fact that the seats, carpet, etc all need to come out for reupholstery or replacement, why not tear it down to the frame if that is a reasonable thing to do.

try searching for the build thread by username "3kgt91sl" (i think that's his username). He's got some insanely detailed refurbish threads on here.

Props for the undertaking, most would part out, and start with something further from the grave.

Help them, for they know not that which they do not know!
