Help me pick a new turbo for my DSM!

Okay, I have pushed my small 16g to the limits. I am running 25 psi and it is making no difference in airflow whether I have it at 21 psi or 25. I think the wheel is just spinning at too many rpms. On the compressor map, at 25psi (pr 2.7), it is almost off the chart.

I am running e85 and tuning with ecmlink v3. I have already logged 35lbs/min with the small 16g. I ran a 12.27 @108 1.6 60ft (90* ambient temps) in my auto awd tsi at completely stock weight minus a crash bar. I am also running 22* peak timing. It didnt change at all from going from 19* up to 22* on this setup either. I ran 12.2 to 12.4 20 times in a row no matter changing boost, timing or afr. Afr was between 12.0 to 12.6 during changes.

When power braking my stock tranny with line pressure mod/shift box, i get about 3500rpms and the small 16g is at 25 psi when I launch and never drops all the way down (probably because of stock o2 housing, unported turbine housing and stock 2g mani unported.

Anyway, I need more power, plain and simple. I want to be in mid to low 11's or maybe 10's. I can lose weight in the car no problem. The engine is a stock 6 bolt rebuild which has performed great and 162psi compression across the board. So I cant go too extreme.

Also, I am not going to upgrade the stall anytime soon. At least in next year. So I have to be able to spool it pretty well at 3500 rpms.

I have thought about FP 68hta. Billet wheel, choke flow 47lbs/min, is running 10.1 @ over 130 in lucas's stock auto tranny dsm. But i feel the td05 housing is a big restriction and that I will be maxing it out soon too. And lucas english's car is a great setup so I dont feel like i will be near his times. But I can keep oil lines, intake, exhaust manifold (dsm flange td05) all the same with this turbo so its the cheapest way out.

Borg warner s256 extended tip. Rated at 300-550whp. I dont know if I would keep dsm flange or go t3. And I dont know which a/r would be best for spool and top end trade off (for t3 that is). It seems like this is the best bet to upgrade once and it supposedly spools real quick and give alot of power. Down sides are new manifold for t3, turbo costs more, need external gate, new o2 housings, new intake, speed density maybe, and oil lines redone.

Or should I do E3 (which I dont think will do much better than small 16g) which is cheapest route, or go big with a t3 35r kit (most expensive) Or maybe a precision turbo t3 5557 or 5857? But I dont know about spool with precision turbos. It seems the borg warner 256et is spooling quick and making power for similiar price.

Well I know this isnt a dsm board and all might not know these situations or care for that matter but I know gene is here and so is donniekak and STM.

Yea, I know about hx35 just dont know if I want to get a used turbo then get a bep housing. I think I might rather go new and rather easy. I know its no big deal and I have thought about it especially because of price. Decisions, decisions

Answer this question, if you go mid to low 11's are you gonna be happy, or are you gonna then want to go further?

The FP 68 will get you there no problem, be reasonably cheap, and you wont have to change much at all to use it which is nice. Downside is thats it its pretty much done there unless you go gutted drag car and some other drivetrain work to get that to 10.1.

If your gonna go further then i would say your gonna want a T3 kit, something like the punishment racing combo it will get you your goal, and if its not enough has plenty more in it to go further. Downside is no matter what you change everything, piping, lines, manifold, ect...

First step as always is figure out your goals.

What is your fuel setup you may need to upgrade that to soon if your on E-85.

As of right now, low 11's will be great for me. If I can drive it all over, have interior (or front at least), and have a low 11 car I will be happy.

Oh and yea I have a single 255 high pressure walbro, re wired with 8 ga wire, FIC 1150cc injectors, I only run pure e85 in this car since I have had it. The rest of the fuel system is stock. I think 1150's on E85 is good for 51 lbs/min at 80% injector duty cycle. I don't know about the 1 pump though. Also, I am at 43 base pressure (its a stock auto fpr). I am tuning with ecmlink v3.

Really I was 100% set on 68hta until I seen people not being able to hold more than 23-4 psi to redline and not making much more than e3's. Also, with internal gates can I run higher than the 25 I am currently doing? And people talking about how the turbine housing is constricting their setup. But I then see english's auto spooling it off stock converter with ease and running 10.1.

A single walbro on our mustang dyno, w/E-85 will get you about 425-450 horse before it runs out, 1150's should be just enough to get there as well. I would suggest getting rid of the stock fuel filter it is a decent restriction on the fuel system.

So in your case i guess i would say go with the FP turbo its simple, and it works, do a little weight reduction and you should be happy with it.

edit: just checked and they are actually on sale right now for $850

Yea I think that is the best right now. I really don't like upgrading turbos twice (which I don't know if I will want more in the distant future) but for the setup I currently have, I could just slap this baby on and be done with it.

Also, since I now have a stock vr4 daily driver, I am contemplating gutting this car like I did my 3000gt. mid 2000lbs or maybe less plus 400whp should be plenty fast, especially with awd and the auto. I hated my 3000gt's auto but with line pressure mod and the shift box and leaving at full boost, the dsm's auto is doing great for me.

Oh and 850 is a good price too bad I don't have that much cash right now. No job, full time (grad) school again = poor. Maybe I can sell some parts off my 3000gt once I am verified. lol
