This. When my compression was down it was so bad it was smoking like a James Bond smoke screen on decel.

And to say that these cars go to 250,000 without issues is the funniest thing I have read in years.

well with out "major issues" I should say. but maybe I was wrong. it's just all my friends talk so highly of japanese enginearing when it comes to cars and how long they last.

I know at the very least some japanese cars can last to atleast 240,000 miles with out issue though as one of my friends has a 300zx 230,000 miles on it and has never replaced or rebuilt the motor and it still runs pretty dang good.

even the most spectacularly built honda civic won't last 240k miles if the previous owner treated it like dogshit (i.e. oil change? what's an oil change?) for that matter, if you bought a 10 year old car and expected not to have to do any maintenance to it, you've got a lot of learning to do.

oh for certain I didn't mean to imply at all that these cars last that long with out maintence. my friend for sure kept up with maintenace and took exlent care of his 300zx.

I supose you can never know for certain how well a car was maintained when you buy it used though.

when I bught mine I just checked everthing I knew how to at the time, made sure there was no leaks and the engine looked clean. asked the usual questions if it was cared for or not. I supose anyone could lie to sell the car but I hoped the guy was honest.

well anyways thanks guys I just need to figure out for my self where to take it from here.

With good preventative maintenance these cars can last a long time.

correct on both counts. unfortunately, you never know when a previous owner will dump a quart of gear-oil into the crank-case, just to disguise lifter-tick so he can sell the car. i've heard of a lot of shiens that people have pulled like that--not necessarily with a 3/s. and let's not forget that there's a bunch of guido-types who think that they can shift an atx like an mtx & practice neutral drops. it's no wonder so many 3/s's end up on the junkyard. people treat them like garbage.
