Back when I was younger and stupid, I got a 94 SL with ~100k up to 135mph, didn't take all year to get there either. Honestly, I don't think 130psi compression is low enough to warrant maxing out at only 125mph, but maybe I guess. I would start looking at other things. Fuel pressure, injector performance, etc..

I have to advise against top speed runs on public roads as well...

130 psi on 10:1 is HORRIBLE! (Unless u want to install a set of snails of course)

It should be 185 psi. And should NOT be lower then 139 psi. With out good compression a engine such as our dohc N/A is worthless.

Dude, just throw some turbo whistlers on your exhaust pipes & cruise around thinking you're fast. Your old Camaro Z-28 may have been able to top out at a higher speed, but in all honesty, who cares? It's not like you can legally go 85 mph anywhere in the states, so just use it as a car that was never really meant to be the fastest thing on the roads & call it a day. One thing to consider is to keep up on the maintenance items (120K service, regular oil changes, etc.) and it should be able to continue to get you from point A to point B.

Sat and watched this thread for some time now and have a few comments

First, I'm suprised a lot of people in here who should know better are making comments on compression numbers when you have no idea where the OP resides. Case and point, you'll absolutely have a reduced effective compression number the higher you go in elevation realltive to reduced atmospheric pressure. 160 compression numbers at sea level translate to 120 compression numbers in Denver. OP just stating numbers off the cuff says nothing if that's the only data given. A qualifying question was never asked regarding geographic location before the comment to "get the engine stand" came out.

Second, there's a number of things that effect overall effective compression numbers. Anything that plays a part in correctly calculating the overall effective compression ratio of an engine, to the cam timing, spark plug shim heigth, gasket thicknesses, and deck height. Just because the manual says you're engine is 10:1 or 9;1 or 11;1 etc. doesn't mean it really is. You could have a taller headgasket, a shimmed plug, a taller deck height, loose tolerances, a different piston dome volume which changes the cylinder volume, and etc. When stripping an engine and doing the math you might actually find that an OEM advertised 11:1 comp engine is actually closer to 10:2. That change in compression ratio will also account for some differences in effective compression rate as well.

Does he have an SL engine, yep. Do we know anything about the motor, nope. Do we know where he lives, nope. If the compression numbers are within 10% of eachother nevermind the banter on pulling the engine. It's not smoking, it's not knocking,it's not down on gas mileage. More than likely it's maint or air density qulaity related.

As someone mentioned and a few agreed. Maintain it, and drive it till it pops!

< Alkivar> we're on our way back from partying in NYC over the weekend ... it was like sunday afternoon we're headed back west
    < Alkivar> we're cruisin... maybe 130-140mph
< Alkivar> flew past a trooper on the side of the road
< Alkivar> trooper lights up ... siren blasting ... chasing us down the highway
< Alkivar> we're both like should we stop ... there's no way he can catch up to us
< Alkivar> we decided to be good and stop
< Alkivar> cop catches up to us ... comes out gun drawn ... pissed as hell
< Alkivar> walks up to the side of the car and goes
    < Alkivar> "SON CAN I SEE YOUR PILOT'S LICENSE"
< Alkivar> Jason pulls out his fucking pilot's license
< Alkivar> cop's jaw hits the fucking ground
< Alkivar> most stunned face I've ever fucking seen
< Alkivar> in this practically a whimper goes "get the fuck out of here"
< Alkivar> no ticket... too embarassed apparently
< Alkivar> I'll never forget that day long as I live
< Alkivar> I was sure we were goin to jail

I have to agree with the drive the car till dead part. OP I have a first gen sl just about to roll over 250k on stock motor/trans, only issues I have is 2nd gear syncro is going out. These cars can make it a long way. But you have to maintain them, learn the cars learn the history of the car you currently have. Keep it for a few years (This one is my 4th 3000) and when you have a good idea about them go looking for a twin turbo. Hell my first car was in 2004 and I am just now getting ready to hopefully be picking up a stealth TT next week.

but just an fyi. Once you learn how expensive these cars are to work on and how you pretty much have to work on them yourself if your not heating your fireplace with $100 bills. I bet you wont car as much about "going fast" at 150mph.. just my 2 cents.

Time for service. That's all. That means a real service. Plugs wires 60K if not done and To include fuel pressure check at idle and as you go up in revs. All the way to red line.
Your fuel filter may be a tad plugged. Leaking o-ring around fuel pump suply line at top of pump. If you where running a wide band, you could see if you where rich or lean at 125.
My guess is way lean and wanting to knock so ECU pulling timing to prevent know and power. Not a good Idea to keep trying with out addressing your issues.
