See Carroll v. United States. This has already been ruled on, not sure what the difference is here. Basically because it's a mobile vehicle, the evidence can be moved and destroyed before a warrant can be issued, which allows officers with probable cause to search without a warrant.

You can be detained with your car until a warrant is signed though.

That is true. Honestly don't know why the law is the way it is. Just pointing out though that the case law is already on the books, this case is nothing new.
