i fly with one backpack carryon. and you can damn well bet that it's going with me so long as i'm ambulatory. most of the time it rides under the seat in front of me. my laptop and irreplaceable shiz is in it. clothes, pro gear, equipment...i don't care. laptop is NOT optional.

besides, even if it's overhead, it takes about .5 seconds for me to rip it free and sling it.
