this was one of my thoughts. another was, thank god the LAPD has developed it's anti-riot tactics since the days of rodney king. third one, after seeing that juxtaposition picture, was "woah, wtf. we should fucking riot for justice!!!!" /sarcasm.

I really think the reason for the rioting is less an explanation than the result is. They get to break into stores en-mass and take stuff home for free. If they did that in a group of 2 or 3, they'd be hunted down by the police and prosecuted. In a group of 50 to 100, there's just too many of them to be able to pick out 1 or 2 or 10 and pursue them for criminal charges. Yeah, there's the video, but it's tough to tell who's who. You'd need a camera man on the ground to get faces, and we all know what would happen to that camera man.

I remember getting into an argument with a friend about the looting going on during Hurricane Katrina. He said that those people had a "right" to that stuff because it was going to to go waste anyway, and that they probably grew up with next to nothing.

I fired back that it was a poor excuse to steal shit. I didn't have a lot growing up either and I would never steal something because of that.
