WOW! You really don't know your American automobile history do you? It wasn't based off the Tempest but the Le Mans, John DeLorean, Bill Collins and Russ Gee wanted to do a performance car and Pontiac kept "blowing them off" well they kept persisting until they got the "OK". However, they could only use an existing car and existing parts off the self.

Well a surprise cam to Pontiac when the first Tempest with the "GTO package option" was introduced to the public and it sold out. This sell out happened two years straight 64 & 65 so in 66 Pontiac decided to have the GTO as it own car not just a package option.

So to say that about the 64 & 65 Le Mans is well "horseshit"

listen, the 60's/70's goat was about as true to the letters "GTO" as the 80's le mans hatchback was true to its predecessor; which is to say...NOT AT ALL.

likewise, the letters GT-R are associated (specifically) with nissan sports cars, but in general, with AWD TT 6's. a RWD mustang isn't even close to the same ball park. might as well slap a goddamn "vtec" sticker on the mustang while they're at it.

seriously, the only way that ford could LEGITIMATELY call that a GT-R would be if it had the drivetrain from the 2010 taurus sho. period.

Because when the GTO was birthed well, it was a souped up Tempest / Le Mans......anyways, knowing what you are talking about now I would agree. Kinda like Dodge throwing "Shelby" on the 80's Daytona's while they still had rights to do so.
