Dumbing down.... I have one phrase that is going to lead to even more of it, COMMON CORE MATH. Seriously, what the fuck is that shit? I was watching my niece last week. She is in Kindergarten and had some math homework. The way they are teaching kids to do math now is beyond stupid.

I heard the big hubbub about common core, so I decided to take a look. To my amazement I saw parts of the system I have used to do mental math in my head for 25+ years. But, it's not for everyone.

The biggest problem with our education system is forcing everyone to the middle. I don't know how to stress this enough, college isn't for everyone, and telling people they have to get a degree or they are a loser is a crime. I know lots of people making 6 figures with no college at all. I also know lots of people with a $50,000 degree that makes them $35,000 a year.

We need to not be afraid to stratify students based on ability, and set them up to be successful. If little jimmy hates math and English, but is great with his hands, expose him to different trades and see what he likes.

The concept of common core isn't a bad thing. Like you said, it's essentially mental math shortcuts. However, it's the way they teach it that is confusing and odd.

it's the most silly shit I've ever seen. no wonder the kids are so dumb. 90% of their tiny mental compasity is used up trying to reinvent the wheel.

And as I predicted, FB is now like the Macarena--it went so mainstream that it's not cool anymore. Eventually the hipsters started doing twitter, snapchat, instagram, etc. I don't follow or keep up anymore. Only idiots get their news from FB feeds--and FB has been proven to tamper with their feeds for the purposes of social engineering & experimenting. And STILL people use it. Privacy settings changed more than a 3rd world country changes leadership, and people STILL use it. Zuckerberg believes he alone is entitled to any privacy--no one on his service is--and STILL people use it. (incidentally, anyone with the name "zucker" in his/her last name is probably not to be trusted, and is likely--in fact--a wanker (Zuckerman, Zucker, etc).

If there's any bright side to social media, it's that it serves as a lasting testament to proof that western culture cares more for what people wore to the latest awards ceremonies, unproven theories about climate change & about the daily lives of non-celebrity-celebrities...than about genocide, terrorism, properly postured geopolitical strategy or fiscal responsibility and prudence within their own governments.

Agreed. As much grief as I give IPD, I too live cautiously. However, I don't let it consume me and I keep plans if it confronts me.

I'm not concerned about what the NSA has on me. The reason why I'm "paranoid" about privacy is because of the 21st century's wonderful invention of "public shaming". We're a few hundred years removed from "The Scarlett Letter", where public shaming was essentially limited to a few townsfolk in your immediate vicinity. Those days are gone. In the 21st century--thanks to social media & idiots in large masses--anything you do can be easily misinterpreted & potentially ruin all of your professional, political, and even your personal life. Look, the NSA will have whatever the NSA will have. I'm not worried about that which I can't control. What I'm concerned about is when/how that information makes it into the public sector. And that's why I maintain a reserved online presence. And it will only get worse, because the stupider the public gets, the less tolerant it will be of ANYTHING apart from the norm.
