Oh sure, that's rational. Like saying that if I don't want to be burglarized, I shouldn't have a house/apartment. Seems legit. Might as well insinuate that staying off the road is the only way to prevent being in an accident--so no point in having a driver's license.

Not just golf... VW got busted cheating emission testing, The CEO recently resigned over it. They're getting hit with huge fines, and will have to recall and repair millions of cars..

20 years ago, this amounted to recent memory, things you did that were personally witnessed, etc. Currently, virtually anything goes--from metadata to things you googled. True, the NSA may well keep track (and many ISP's). But you don't also have to allow 2 dozen 3rd party trackers to also monitor your online presence. The less hands on my data, the better. I may--in fact--be doing nothing illegal online. But god forbid my personal property gets seized during some BS investigation, I really don't need the 1st thing to be seen is targeted browsing ads based on kinky stuff I happened to look at 6 months ago.

If the US society in general was a LOT less prudish, this might be a different story. As it stands, virtually ANY vice you indulge in--even in moderation--brands you a social pariah. Porn? Pervert. Alcohol? Drunk. Marijuana? Drug addict. Swinger? Immoral. Gambler? Lack of self control. I've been waiting for society to change it's medieval draconian views on vice...pretty much as long as I've been alive. There's just too many prudish bible thumpers & overprotective baby boomers (Hey, what I did in the 60's was fine for ME--but damn you if you ever try to do any of the same things). So as long as the social verdict on vice is (for lack of better term) just this side of Iranian, I'll keep my trackable online presence to the minimum extent possible. To include VPN service if I so choose.
