Exactly, it's how I did it the first time.

I had to learn most Algebra later in life. All that time teachers telling us we would never use it and damn if I didn't get a job where I had to know it.

Same here. But that's because at a glance, pressed for time, i try and solve equations by starting with the simplest parts first. I do still adhere to order of operations. The problem in this case is that the division sign != a /, and a "/" is more easily interpreted in my mind as a fraction than a division symbol.

I should know better about right > left though.

Like Nick said, they get hung up on the 6(6) being the next operation (because parentheses). They overlook that once they solve the parentheses equation that the next step then becomes multiplication/division from left to right.

I think it's because the way PEMDAS is drilled into your head people are doing the multiplication before the division, nothing to do with the parentheses...

It's absolutely the parentheses. If you read the OP by Nick you'll see that they try to explain that the answer is 1 because of parentheses. They see that 36/6(6) and revert back to parentheses operations come first.
