I maintain they're called butt dimples, since they're immediately above the posterior. Back dimples can refer to anything on the span of the back, to include deltoids, etc. Granted, (some) back-muscle definition on a female is sexy--but that can sometimes produce "dimples" in other locations besides the dimples of Venus.

Always thought they looked...odd. Like something (a muscle or what not) was missing that created the dimples. It's not something I would run a girl away over, but it's not something I would seek out either. *shrugs*

Actually, it's a lack of subcutaneous fat that allows for that to show. As far as thigh-gap, well I just like it because it tends to show the vulva and the mons pubis more.
