Perhaps instead of enforcing the culture we have now, of going to college immediately after highschool, give a window of 6 years to start college, and when you do, you can put any loans you have on deferment (auto, home, etc). I think the biggest challenge anyone has is paying their debts while trying to go back to school. This isn't a great solution, and the interest would rack up, but they do it for the military when you join... perhaps extend that to kids that decide to defer college.

A: Force a highschool class in buisness 101 to arm kids with the tools to decide if that college edumacation meets Cost vs Return. (80% does not)

B: Rein in the cost of an education, eliminate government subsidizing, actually bring value to the dollar spent for education.

OR...we need to stop trying to convince EVERYONE that higher education is they key to being gainfully employed. The gigantic myth of "well if you get a higher degree/s you'll get a better job" is a load of hogwash. You know what irony is? Celebrating getting your Master's degree at a bar & being served drinks by a bartender with a PhD in your field.

Worse, by pushing everyone towards "higher education", we've also forcibly dumbed-down the standards, which is why the USA educational system ranks so low in the world. And loans are a symptom of that--not the cause. If the pool of potential students is smaller (as in decades previous) the higher education system has to adapt or die. Instead, we push the majority of people into college--and we give out free student aid to most of them; which effectively raises the minimum threshold of cost--since EVERYONE has that money.

You want a proper educational system? First you establish standards on par with the Japanese. Then you make it FREE for everyone who maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher. Anyone with < 3.0 GPA goes on probation for a semester--and if they fail, they have to take a year off before being allowed to re-enroll in ANY college; AND they have to pay out of pocket (or find PRIVATE SECTOR loans).

of course the NCAA will pitch a royal fit about it--but fuck em. The NCAA has done more to destroy the education system in the USA than any president ever has.

you know school is the only thing where loans are given out for 10's of thousands of dollars with no security for a return on payment for something that may or may not aide in the repayment of said loan. furthermore these loans are given to people with literally no credit or work history. can't imagine why that doesn't work out better.
