For most people, you will see little difference, and unless you plan to go Full Frame in the future, the extra money is better spent on additional accessories, such as flash, filters, etc.
To elaborate on what I mean by this, you end up spending three times the price and it really doesn't look like three times the picture quality. You have pretty steep diminishing returns with that lens, unless you're going full frame. For the extra couple hundred dollars saved, you could get a Speedlite 430EX and a knock-off omnibounce diffuser and get much more satisfying results from all your images, especially indoors and at night.
