Thread: injector testing question

    injector testing question

a while back i bought some 550 injectors from a member on here. let me start off by saying that i am very happy with the deal and the member. the trouble i am having is that the member sent me 6 matching injectors (one with a zip tie around it) and a 7th oddball injector and nothing else in the box. i emailed the member but didnt hear back from him for a few days. not being able to get ahold of him and needing to get my car back together i put the 6 matching injectors in. it seemed to start and idle fine. wbo2 read ok (car hasnt been tuned yet other than the adjustments that are called for when using a maft right out of the box) car didnt drive all that well though, but i just attributed that to need for tuning. a while later the seller replied informing me that the injector with the ziptie on it was a "bad injector" and part of it needed to be transferred to the oddball injector and that one should be used instead.

as i am sure you all can guess by now, i had already cut that ziptie off and i had no clue what cylinder that injector ended up on. well using my HHH programmer i dried turning cylinders off to listen for a difference. it wasn't very constant bc some times turning a certain cylinder off would have a huge effect, other times it would have no effect. i also tried pulling plug wires, but seeing that i am running accell coils that just cause a lot of arcing and LOTS of laughing every time i would get shocked.

so i thought test 3 would be the best. i pulled the injectors and the fuel rail off the lower intake manifold and put a balloon on each injector. i then cranked the car over so that the injectors could fill up the balloons and i wold be able to see which injector wasn't working. i took each balloon fuel of gas and dumped it into its own cup and then put the cups side by side to visually check the difference. i thought for sure i would be able to find the bad injector this time... but... no . all the cups have exactly the same amount of fuel in them.

not the question part. does anyone have another way to test injectors besides having to send them off? i am open to new ideas bc i dont want to put it back together again and still not know if i have a bad injector or not.

Lol nice flow test. Use your HHH and test again, listen closely and give the car some rev's while testing. The injector in question may be intermittently bad or have a bad spray pattern.

You can continuity check them with a meter, should have 2-3 ohms of resistance, don't think this will help you out though.

Sounds like they are flowing fine so if it is bad it must be a spray pattern issue. I would just send them all off. The peace of mind knowing they are working right is worth it.

Any suggestions on where to send them? Prices? Turn around time?

I sent mine to RC because mine are RC injectors but I think I have heard good things about witch hunter. Shop around a little.

Do the resistance test as previously stated, if that doesn't get you there, you can get a more consistent RPM drop test by disconnecting the IAC, and turning the idle up slightly. The computer won't be able to adjust for perceived changes in load...
