Thread: FMIC with 9b's?

    FMIC with 9b's?

I was thinking about getting a CXR FMIC kit for a future 15g upgrade. Either way i know its overkill but i was wondering how much it would affect the 9b's in the meantime. Also i think i should but would i have to retune?

    Thanks,
    Zak

FMIC is always a nice upgrade. I have one on my 9b car. You don't have to retune because intake air temp is of course factored in by the ECU. But, just be aware that lots of people report surging issues with TD04s (especially smaller ones) + FMIC, especially if you're using a Karman MAF. If you're using mass air or speed density, you probably won't have any trouble.

hmm, curious. I know we have an IAT sensor but that is just for ambient air, no? Can the computer account for a denser air charge? Also have you noticed your spool suffer with your fmic?

Ah right, I'm forgetting how the stock setup works. Yep, IATs are ambient. In my experience you don't need to retune though. A few degrees cooler air isn't going to hurt. If anything, you can get away with being a little leaner if your charge is cooler.

I noticed a very small change in spool. Nothing that would sway my decision.

Another thing is some people in hot climates have cooling issues. Never been a problem for me, but I've always used a cutout or 99 bumper and stock fans.

Personally, I would wait until the 15G's were bought and ready to put on before installing the FMIC. Your going to have to take off some the intercooler pipes anyways to install them, so that would be ideal. I don't really see any extra benefits of a FMIC on 9b's. You may end up with a little bit more turbo lag though.

IAT's are almost guaranteed to be much lower with a good quality frontmount. Anything is an upgrade over the stock smic's.

I can do halfhour sessions without worry of increasing IAT's, don't think stockers can do that.

^ Same here, it's repeated pulls that really make the FMIC shine. No heatsoak.

I always thought that it slightly decreased the efficiency of the 9b turbos because you have more piping/area to pressurize. I personally think you'd be better off doing the upgrade with 15g turbos at the same time. 15gs are cheap and bolt right on so why not?

If you`re using the stock air mas meter it will compensate for the IC.

What happens (for the same boost target) is charge temps are lower, the air is denser but that MUST mean the turbo has ingested more air; and that is metered by the Air Mass Meter..

Its very nominal. My 9b car, with sweet intakes, was able to generate 26psi spike, 14psi to redline. "Lag" was the same as before (stock IC system) due to the design of the FMIC system. (2.25" hot side, 3" cold side, top to bottom IC).
