I had a squeeking belt whenever I had the ac on. I tightened up the belt a little bit as it was a little loose and the squeak went away. All of the sudden I hear a rididculous metal grinding sound. I pulled the belt off and see the ac compressor clutch is mangled inside.
Now I was originally thinking I would just replace the clutch as that was the damaged part. But what caused it to fail? If the compressor was locking up, and I tightened the belt up forcing it to turn, could that have killed the clutch? Or is it as simple as the bearing in the clutch going bad causing the clutch to fail?
I would like to avoid opening up the ac system if I dont have to but I also dont want to install a new clutch and have it go bad if the compessor is the issue. Which one should I replace? The ac.has worked fine this whole time btw.
Thanks
