could use some insight into a lifter tick question

My TT lifter tick gets crazy loud then almost silent then crazy loud and it seems random... I know there is a solution to fix the tick, but why is the racket so random?

You have sludge most likely. Change the oil and use CD2 Oil detergent in place of a quart of oil. Go drive for about an hour. You will smile.

Just to be safe though, when they get loud, is your oil pressure normal?

I have found that with heavier weight oil the oil pressure stays more stable and oil leaks less often, so I use a high viscosity full synth, and I just did an oil change to that from a water thin but very clean Mobile One that the PO used... on his oil, pressure would drop to near zero at idle, and lifter tick would be loudest after a long drive when parking, Now on my 20W 50 Castrol full synth I have not done the long drive yet, but on the short warm up and test drive the tick went from GONE to LOUD to quiet then loud then gone then quiet again... all while parked after a short test drive on the heavy synth... Oil pressure stayed higher and more constant on the heavier oil...

Gonna drive a good 60 miles or so tonight and see how she sounds throughout...

PS, I also know that pressures run low at idle anyway, and the the stock guage is far from accurate. That's why I am not quite panicking at the low oil pressure yet...

Yeah lifter tick is random and comes and goes which is a good thing because a constant noise can result to a more complex issue. Your oil pressure should never drop to 0 or the minimum line on your gauge, even at idle.

Solution? Get some 99 Lifters. 3SX is selling them for dirt cheap right now so you should try to grab some, I did .
