i once had a suspension at my job lengthened by a day because i posted f u work , only had two people from work on fb and settings at restrictive , so was easy to figure out who ratted on me

I really hate the way our work/personal lives are becoming more and more intertwined. I would never give an employer access to what I consider an aspect of my personal life. I've never posted anything bad about any of the jobs I've held or people I've worked with specifically, if I do, I keep it very general, no names, etc. In previous fields, I've found that whatever you do, try not to burn bridges with your former employer/coworkers, because you may end up working with them later on down the line at another company.

I once got called into my boss's office because I was at a bar with some friends of mine, and bitching about how I hated working with someone in my group. Turns out someone at that bar heard me, knew the person I was talking about and also worked for the company. Told the other person about it, and they tattled to HR about it. Since I had spoken the words, there was obviously no record of it, and the account I gave was different than what they had heard. But, had I posted on Facebook or some other site, it could easily be used against you and recorded.

Bottom line, if I'm not at work, then whatever I'm doing (assuming it's nothing illegal) should have no bearing on my job whatsoever and should be of no concern to an employer.

I still have a Myspace from 04, haven't used it in a long ass time. Made a Facebook log in just to check out the profile of a chick who was coming to my place to buy some 3s parts. Looked around for 30 seconds, realized how much it sucked, deleted account.

I have no idea what fascinates people so much about Facebook. If I did have a Facebook though I would refuse log in access to an employer. They do not control my personal time and will not have access to it.

It's amazing that people never learn on the FB thing. Seen tons of stories about people getting fired over things they post. I have next to no interest in FB. I have a BS account that I use to follow WVU insiders.

In this specific case, they're going to be in trouble for not allowing her union rep to be there. Definite overstepping of bounds, and over punished. She's not getting her job back, I don't think, but she'll walk away with her pockets lined.

I'm not one of those people who is on it all the time, I check it sporadically for updates from my friends, but rarely post much about what I'm doing. It's really the best way for me to keep in touch with the goings on of my friends and family, who are scattered all over the world at this point. Picking up the phone and calling or texting just isn't an option to stay connected with everyone anymore. So for my purposes, it's a good thing. What's bad about it is that some people don't realize that what they post can sometimes be seen by people that were never meant to, and I think it gives employers an excuse to have one more way to pry into the personal lives of employees.

my account is indefinitely suspended. multiple reasons for this:

1. opsec makes it difficult to make anything personal about my page without worrying about how it could be used against me by the enemy.
2. i realized it becomes very difficult to avoid having your private arguments made public--as willpower is usually lacking in both parties.
3. i already have enough dirt on me if you go through the normal channels. i don't need to make it more accessible.
4. i have a very large problem with employers requiring such a revealing expose on my own life. either they accept my application (and my continued employment) as being free of all social-networking-media--or i don't really want or need to work there in the first place.

p.s.
my TS security clearance review doesn't even require me to divulge that kind of stuff--login/password/anything; as compared with call-centers, teaching positions, etc. i'll take a moment for that to sink in while you ponder the legality of the latter.

Is this really that common of practice to seek permission to access one's personal media accounts (ie. Facebook)?! I have had higher ups from my work try to add me. Not. A. Chance.
